Its all pretty silly when you really think about it. USC, as good as they will very likely be, has a glaring NR in the last column. It seems ridiculous to me that a team would get that many first place votes after not even finishing the previous season in the top 25. There are only a few programs that would get that kind of treatment by the voters, and LSU ain't one of them.
WTF?
USC finished in the Top 5 in the AP...they weren't allowed to be ranked in the Coaches last year.
It's not like the coaches didn't seem them play or decided they shouldn't be ranked because of their play.

I didn't say that they shouldn't be ranked. My point was that there is no unified logic behind the voting. Should the rankings be based on how a team "looked" the previous season, how it actually finished the season, its record, its schedule, its recruiting class from two years prior, a gut feeling, or what?

whats the points based off of ?
25pts for a 1st place vote
24pts for a 2nd place vote
..
..
..
1pt for a 25th place vote.
Add them up and you get your total.

That's mostly what they go by.
All the preseason Top 5 teams except Oklahoma finished in the Top 6 of last year's final rankings...AP (which didn't exclude teams) because they're not beholden to the NCAA.

USC was NR last year because they were on probation and ineligible to receive votes in the coaches' poll. Had they been eligible, they would have finished last year in the rankings for sure.

You missed the point. The other poster was talking about last year when he said the coaches didn't think they shouldn't be ranked. How a team did last year is a big part of where they are in the preseason rankings. That's why USC is ranked so highly. They did very well last year. They were not ranked in the coaches' poll last year because they were ineligible due to probation. Now that they are not on probation and are eligible, coaches are ranking them according to how good they think they are.

Replacing their best defensive players
Bama lost nearly all their playmakers on D and Richardson.
Lacy is no TR of MI.

The only way lacy looks good is bc of their (BS) 3 all Americans on o line.
But he still won't produce and likely will be injured. Bama fans love of lacy is bewildering. I wouldn't trade any of our 5 for him.

I see no problem with the poll. LSU is getting an incredible amount of respect for a team with no proven QB. I think it speaks volumes to how good the rest of the team is expected to be.
I understand the Bama votes as well. They are the incumbent #1, and should be until they are knocked off. I know its a new season, but they will be very good. History shows they have a knack for reloading with talent.
As for USC, I think there are two thoughts people have with them. Their offense is as talented as you will find at the college level, and you can make a good case for them being #1. If you treat the poll as an indictment of how talented a team will be in 2012, I think USC deserves the votes.if you treat the poll as an indictment of how well a team will finish, I think people are struggling to weigh USC's depth against their schedule. Barring injuries, I see no reason they shouldn't play for it all, but that will be tough if players go down.
I don't think LSU will hold on to #1 after the UM/Bama game, but they will get their shot with Bama in time.
LSU may knock off Bama and USC in the same season. That would go a long way towards healing some wounds held by this fanbase. Then again, this is LSU and our fans rarely act logically.

Four point difference between LSU and Bama.
That won't be the case in November.
or by the second week of the season.

I could easily see us playing Bama in Miami for the title again this year after LSU beats Bama in BR.
I think USC and OU drop at least one game. We could see a near repeat of last year IMO

you mean you think the voters would give them another Mulligan sitting at home eating popcorn while LSU wins the SECCG?
Lord I hope not

The way Lacy runs, it will keep him injured a good bit this season.

If they are perceived again to be the second best team and there are no other viable unbeatens, absolutely. Moreover, Lord Saban has that kind of stroke as well.

While that would be cruel and wrong, the melt down on TD would be pretty amazing to see.
