I think this has to be part of it. Not to absolve O or Meatball as the DL recruiting has certainly beeen subpar. But our All American types like Lavalais, Williams, Dorsey, Bennie Logan, Brockers(although he could have played DE in a 3-4), Claude Wroten, Drake Nevis, Freak Johnson(high school AA), etc...all those dudes got to shine as DTs in a 4-3. How many would have balked at the thought of having to basically engage blockers and eat space in a 3-4?

I understand the benefit of he 3-4 as a scheme. All things being equal, it may be the superior scheme. But I think it’s obvious that it lends itself to recruiting LBs and DBs—the guys who will be making most of the tackles, sacks on blitzes, TFLs, and get most of the praise—than it is DLinemen, who have to really buy into “team” by sacrificing their own numbers. In this day and age of recruiting making these guys mini celebrities at 16/17, I think it’s a much harder sell than being a 4-3 DT.

Again, not absolving O—we should be doing better—but I do think it’s a tougher sell than before we made the switch. Saban manages to do it, but he’s a different recruiting beast than there’s ever been. I wonder if Cotton sees himself as a tweener in the 3-4. Or maybe it’s something personal that’s none of our business and he’ll wind up closer to home at Tech. Or maybe—and this would be no indictment of him—players may start using the little power they now have with the Transfer Portal, and try to leverage that into promises of playing time. Hope he stays. We’ll see.
