Two Point Conversion Note
Posted on 11/9/09 at 12:19 pm

LSU leads 15-10 with 3:19 left in the 3Q and goes for 2.
Yesterday,
New England leads Miami 22-16 with 3:15 left in the 3Q and goes for 2.
Just a note that it was not as bad of a decision as some people think.

it was the CORRECT call. Mathematically, at the time, was the ONLY call to make.

Yep, all that did was make it where we would have to score a td and then get the two point conversion.

wrong. wrong wrong. If we would have continued to play like we did in the first half then bama could have easily hit two field goals. think about it.

It was the right call.
LSU kicks the extra point and Bama wins 17-16. What do you think people would be saying??

New England has Tom Brady and we have JL.
that has to be taken into account too.

It was 100% the right call.

Thank you. It was the right call. I was happy Miles did this. The idea of "wait till the 4th quarter" is b.s. It's better to try in the 3rd when there is more time. We were ahead and had we made it, it would have put more pressure on them.

Not sure we would hear any complaining had LSU made the 2 pt conversion. Yeah, sort of like if LSU would not have made one of those 4th down runs vs Florida a couple of seasons ago.

Yeah, it's certainly debatable, but still, I think it was a bad decision, and an even worse one considering (1) the nature of LSU's offense, and (2) Bama's red zone difficulties.

Seems like the only call to make. I was stunned that it was even mentioned.

But that's only one possibility out of many, and quite frankly, not one that's very likely. What if LSU kicked a field goal to go ahead 18-10, and then Bama came back and won the game in OT after a 18-18 tie?
There was just waaaay too much time left to change away from regular procedure at that point.

I would not have gone for two in that situation but that is not what bothers me. What bothers me is Miles put one finger up and said go for one after the TD. You can hear it on the audio. You then hear someone else say go for two and then Miles says "go for two, you got to go for two".
He should have known long before the TD whether we would go for one or two. It just seems he hadn't thought it through yet and that bothers me.

You can't use the future to help make the decision. Going up by a TD means one play can't beat you. That is at least my logic. I would be more scared of Ingram breaking a ridiculous TD run then the idea of possibly trading field goals.
The reason we were out of the game was because of injuries and a few missed calls. It wasn't this call.

I think it was the correct call...I think the chart i linked to confirms it. I think most coaches use something like this. I don't know if I read it right.

Agreed

You didn't, because at the top, all charts should read.
NEVER LOOK AT THIS CHART UNTIL THE 4TH QUARTER
Having said that, I said at the time I wouldn't have gone for two, but it is not a "fireable offense".

Well according to the chart a feeling of about 25% of converting was needed. I think we had that. I think he was thinking if I go up by a TD a big play can't beat me.
I personally think we win if we don't have all the injuries.

Both are horrible decisions. It's amazing how many times you'll see this wrong decision made at the highest of levels. For some reason, a lot of coaches seem incapable of looking beyond just the next score even when so much time is left.

I thought it was a good call. I wanted Les to be more aggressive, and I'm glad he was
