I love the story about how Huey P. Long built those dorms in the shape of a stadium b/c the state wouldn't give him money to build a stadium.

For many years, LSU's Tiger Stadium did double duty as a football stadium and as student housing. When it opened in 1924, seating was on either side of the football field, with open areas at each end zone. In the 1930's, Huey P. Long wanted to add more seats to the stadium, but the state budget had designated funds only for new dormitories at LSU, not stadium improvements. So Huey put the dormitories in the stadium, closing the north end zone to make a horseshoe, and as one commetator put it, built a roof that looked like stadium seating.

During my freshman year I was among the many who arrived on campus without prior room arrangements. The stadium had at that time large, barracks-like units that could accommodate 30 or 40 people if I recall correctly. We were housed there for several weeks until rooms became available elsewhere on the campus. The large dorms had a very military-like atmosphere, but that was not a problem since most of those living there were veterans. I later moved to a double room in the stadium where I spent my first semester. I don’t remember a problem with the lack of a/c, but I hated the bathrooms

I lived in East Stadium on the fith floor in the 86-87 school year. My mom actually cried when she dropped me off in the fall. No Ac. No stalls for the toilets or showers. We called our section of the dorm "The Rock" because of the extreme conditions. My favorite memory is lying in my bed and hearing MIKE THE TIGER growl in the middle of the night. The next year I moved up in class to the Pentagon.

I miss those days. Anybody remember those infamous food fights at the Kirby Smith cafeteria.

I lived on the 3rd floor of East Stadium during the summer and fall of 1987. Yes, no air conditioning and the bathrooms were military style, but I loved living there. I would wake up and do pull-ups on the pipes that ran along the hallway. My room was very big. As a previous poster mentioned, it was very cool to hear Mike the Tiger roar. What was also interesting was that there were windows along the inside hallway which gave me a view of the Tiger Stadium walkway. My boss when I was an RA at Hatcher lived in West Stadium, and he had his own above ground swimming pool.

During my 3 1/2 years 73-76, at LSU I lved at 7 (seven!!!) dorms. None were good. However just three weeks ago I dropped my son off at a week long summer conference at Southern Miss, and his dorm room was not any better. Even though the bathroom facilities were more private, the dorm rooms were just as ancient, dirty, and unliveable (as well as electrical plugs that probably caused 1-2 fatalities a year.) South Stadium (my only stadium experience) did not have any glare of the rising sun (in fact a beautiful view of sunsets over the river) but the most horrible din, loud clanging of pipes heating up in the winter mornings. I don't understand the physics, but all I knew that to sleep late in South Stadium you had to be either real sleep- deprived or really drugged (seriously) to rest at all. No AC, dirty smell, sounds from the parking area and streets were small troubles compared to the clamor of the plumbing.

My first year at LSU (1975) they put me in West Stadium, first floor. On about the third day I awoke to loud noises outside my window. There was a construction crew unloading steel pipe piles. On the door was a note that we had to move out the place because they were beginning construction on the west upper deck. I lived there about a week or so before moving.

My older brother lived in North Stadium and was famous for keeping a pet nutria in his room. About a year ago someone posted here on the rant about my brother's nutria. FYI, brother is doing fine, no word on the nutria since the early 70's.

Me too. Went from N Stadium in 1985 to Pentagon C. Like upgrading from Motel 6 to the Ritz Carlton.

Are you kidding me!?!?
The stadium dorms had no a/c and the heat rose through those concrete walls like a Mutha. We tried to smuggle a window unit in, but we blew the circuits on the entire 5th floor!!!

Great article. I recognize that pic and two of the men in there were friends of my dad's.

I heard that LSU might contract them out to a company that will redo them and make them into pregame tailgate suites.

Lived in North Stadium and was an RA in West Stadium.

The head RA lived in West Stadium and had a swimming pool in his quarters. Not BSing. Was incredibly humid. His name was Randy Robichaux. He was gay and way over the top. He was shot and killed in a mugging right after Bachus. Think his brother was a monsigniour. He had a HUGE funeral.

The rooms and bathrooms differed. Some bathrooms were big and way open. Some rooms were really small and some a good size.

My first room was on the 5th floor of North and was no bigger than a jail cell. Was miserable climbing those stairs in the heat. But waking up 10 minutes before class, putting on gym shorts, a tshirt and flip flops and jetting to class was cool.

Can't tell you all the sh&t that was done there. Filling an album cover with shaving cream then putting the edge under the door and stomping on it. Spraying hairspray under the door and lighting it. Putting ketchup packets under the seat of the toilets. Running the hot water in the showers for an hour then taking a steam sauna.

And we'd pass liquor through the windows of the hall to our buddies in the stadium before football games.

Ah... good times.

I lived in Hatcher as a freshman, but had friends in North Stadium. One was a RA and he had some guys who always caused him problems. He was taking a nap one afternoon when they cranked up "Burn Rubber" by the Gap Band on the stereo...he really thought there was a motorcycle on the 4th floor so he came charging out to catch the offender only to see those guys ROTFLAO at him. Great times and memories

Best stadium dorm experience was the following.... The spring of 1975, the English military band, the "Black Watch" (I think that's the name), played in the Coliseum. It was the militaristic crud with the drums and bagpipes and trumpets , not my style, but still pretty heart thumping when the fifty odd piece group got going. Somehow a dude got a recording of one of their best " charge the enemy" tunes, snuck into the stadium, got into the pressbox and on the frigging PA system at 2AM blared it to the entire campus. Blared it for about 30 minutes until they could unplug it. Unreal...

I stayed in Pentagon in 1985-1986. No AC but it was the best dorm life on Campus. I still talk with a few guys on my floor to this day.

It was hard for me the first few times back at LSU. In my heart I felt at home around "The GON".

I knew a few guys who stayed in Stadium. None were happy about it. Pentagon, Hodges and Stadium were un airconditioned at the time. Hatcher, Kirby Smith and Power were all pussies as far as we were concerned. LOL
