Chavis is a good coach but UT always seemed to give up 3rd and long 85% of time. We always said "here we go..it's third and Chavis". Did LSU give up a lot of third and longs last year?

Hhmmm...

3 top-10 finishes (#5 in '05, #3 in '06, #1 in '07)

doesn't this kind of blow up the "can't develope talent" argument?

weren't these players being developed if they got better results over those years??

Tiger fans know that what you are saying is fact. The problem is this board has become infested with a bunch of turds who just come on here to flame. IF, and that is a big IF, one of our QB's can't just play average, the Tigers will contend again. I just hope this new confidence that JJ has discovered doesn't make him do things that he is not capable of doing. He just needs to be consistent and get the ball to the play makers. I can't believe that he can improve so much since the spring game. Hopefully the coaches don't wait too long to make changes if needed.

Offensive line is a much, much bigger question mark than QB.

Pluses:

1. He can still maintain recruiting standards; sometimes he is below and sometimes above.

2. Les is a very nice person. He takes time to engage with fans and does a lot of nice publicity acts for LSU.

3. His players seem to love playing for him - at least his first teams seemed to from 2005-2007.

Minuses:

1. He's no expert on either side of the ball and was never a top coordinator prior to becoming head man at Okie State

2. He is not a head coach who seems to be on top of every aspect of the game and defers to his coordinators too often, yet some still think he wants total control. Whatever the case may be, he is not in charge. He still has the brooked trout look and it's year 6.

3. His ability to develop the talent that HE has recruited since 2005 has been a disappointment. A lot of players that I expected to be total studs turned out to be just slightly above average. Not many seemed to progress under him.

Positives;

1. Recruiting
2. Has delivered positive results in most years
3. Intends to run a clean, do-the-right-thing program

Negatives;

1. Doesn't run a disciplined on-field program, (too many penalties, missed assignments, out of shape players, too much individual free-lancing and seat of the pants decision making);
2. Seemed to lose the fire to put in the effort required to win week in, week out after he won his Nat'l title. The players seemed to want it more than he did the last couple of seasons;
3. In season (and game) adjustments, teaching and player development are minimal at best.

This is going to be a telling year.

"3. Good human being"

Who cares if he's a good guy or not. You think Nick Saban got to where he is right now by being a "nice guy?" No the guy's an a-hole and doesn't care who knows it.

1 National Championships (negates your original 3 negatives)

4 of 5 postseason bowl wins

5 consecutive winning seasons (worst season in 5 years was an 8-win season) and by percentage the winningest coach in LSU history (in coaches with more than 3 years as HC)

3 top-10 finishes (#5 in '05, #3 in '06, #1 in '07)

10 years from now, you would be saying the same thing.

Positves:
1. Recruiting rankings and talented players
2. Seems to try and push a family atmosphere
3. Seems to be liked by many of the players

Negatives:
1. Brings very little expertise to the table (OL would be what you'd think, but its been strange)
2. Bad management of game-time situations + Simply does not seem to have control/disciplined play on the field.
3. Player development and football IQ seems to have dropped the past two seasons as his recruits have filled out the entire roster.

Miles is a good coach, but gets both bad and good reps he doesn't deserve. He's no different at recruiting and be ethical/good guy than any other coach, but does sell his "family guy" image better.

He does seem to learn from his mistakes, albeit slowly, but still relies way too much on his coordinators in circumstances he shouldn't.

Overall a good coach, but will only go as far as his assistants take him on both sides of the ball.
