This is why people are bitching about out scoreboard…

What we actually see during a replay (when most people would look at it to see what happened)
Not including “side ads”
39% Ads
13% “stats”
47% Replay
Please notice the black splotch on the actual replay. Yes, that’s an ad IN the replay.
If you include the “side ads” what we see during a replay is:
55% Ads
9% “stats”
35% Actual Replay
So, for $7,000,000 we spent on this new super-duper-awesome-HD-scoreboard, when LSU shows a replay we get $3.85 Million worth of Ads and $2.45 Million worth of replay.
Nice job LSU not sticking it to the fans.

And if anyone noticed, the TigerVision replays were full screen this weekend, with small ads (comparatively speaking, of course) in each corner.

Coon's ScoreBoard Crusade...I am enjoying your take on this.
I hope to make a game this year to weigh in on the controversy.
What was the point in spending all that money on it if you aren't going to use it correctly?

This way they can change the ads to liquor if the team loses.

The ads paid for the sign

Does anyone have a color picture of the scoreboard during a replay? I am curious to see what all the fuss is about.

I get the ad complaints, but anyone thinking that anymore of that screen was going to be ad-less is crazy. Advertising/sponsorship is how sports stay alive; Capital One, McDonalds, Coca-Cola, etc. didn't spend their money to be small logs that really can't be seen throughout the stadium, they paid to be seen well.
The picture is bigger (about a 2:1 ratio) and its a hell of a lot better quality. Last year, watching replays was terrible, the SE screen is too far away to see much and the NE is to close to see anything.

great analysis. i unfortunately have not seen it in person yet but will very shortly. i agree, this does seem ridiculous and thanks for spending the time to do the numbers. great work.

the ad in the replay is distracting and should be relocated

then tell me why all other schools don't have this ridiculousness going on with their score boards.

Well, the ads bring in money, but you're right. It is quite annoying.
There is basic information on the south end zone scoreboard that is not available on the north end zone scoreboard. (I forget exactly what it was--maybe timeouts or down-and-distance.)
It's the same way with the new baseball scoreboard. I was expecting to have a much easier-to-read scoreboard when it came to stats and scores, but there were so many ads, that I actually had to squint my eyes to see what the batter's average was, because it was more difficult to read than the old one.
I mean, yeah, I still think the new scoreboards are an improvement overall, but some of the details really do piss me off sometimes.

Just curious but has it ever crossed your mind that those "ads" paid for the board? Including the 35% of "actual replay"
I know its mind boggling this new thing they call business and marketing.

What's up with that shite?

I've gotta say that is absolutely and utterly ridiculous! Especially the additional little adverstisement in the MIDDLE Of the already shrunk actual replay screen! Why not just buy a great big billboard and stick it there with a little scoreboard underneath. It would have been no worse and a helluva lot cheaper. Wow. Just wow.

Here's a pic from the end of the game this weekend:
During the Vandy game, all replays were seen in the area between all the ads.
During the ULL game, however, all replays were full screen with small ads in the corners.

having as awesome a screen as this screen is, if they installed a HUGE GAUDY Ad Only Billboard the same size as the scoreboard on each side of the scoreboard with blinking lights and all kings of stupid shite and letting them actually use the new HD Scoreboard for REPLAYS (yeah right) would be 10 times better than what we have.

They chose to do it elsewhere, its the same as schools not hanging ANY ad banners in their stadium. Each school has its own marketing strategy.

also, is lsu the only school that subscribes to this super secret "business and marketing"? because you don't see near as much of this bullshite at other schools.

quote:Yeah but the point was not to spend all that money to put up a giant video advertisement. I realize that the ads pay for the screen but if the ads practically take up the whole screen then there really is no point in having it. If they need revenue so badly then I guess they really couldn't afford the screen in the first place. Just put a huge static billboard up there to generate revenue if they are so broke. That would of course be ridiculous, but just trying to make a point.
