The Ole BeachComber. I could never tell how much yardage the tigers had gained with Ferguson. We would pick up 3 yards and he'd make it sound like a 20 yard burst. The other team would gain 20 and he made it sound a 3 yard pickup.
I used to see Scarse fishing at Old River with his shirt off a big straw hat and a red face and I'm sure a cold beer.

broadcast by the LSU Sports Network (and usually on an A.M. station)

ONLY on AM! I remember it wasn't until the early 80"s that my hometown's radio station moved the games to their FM station. I loved the games on AM. The crackling noise of AM sounded like the crowd erupting on a big play.

One of my great memories was being the spotter for John Ferguson and Doug Moreau for their Tigervision broadcasts in 1984. I got to sit right between the two of them in the booth. They were both class individuals.

I also remember listening to John's call of games with my dad while growing up on the Mississippi coast.

He was an all-time great broadcaster with a huge voice.

When I graduated in '63, moved to Memphis and then to Gallatin, Tn.--at that time our only contact for LSU sports was WWL, LSU Sports Network and John Ferguson. In the fall it was a cold beer and John Ferguson on Saturday night. On Monday all you could see or hear was Tennessee unless LSU had beaten them on Saturday nite with John Ferguson.

thanks for the memories guys. I used to listen to the game with my dad every saturday night on the radio. I loved JF. Listening to the games back in the 60's and 70's was just as fun ( if not more so) than watching the games on TV. Not sure how that is, but IT IS.
Very few games on TV back then. I do remember playing Archie his senior year and beatin the tar out of em on national tv. I remember the first Notre Dame game at night and we roll'd em and it was fantastic.

I remember only am radio back in those days. Was FM just acid rock or something. I remember FM only having some type of Acid rock / alternative music . Who can clear this up for me? thanks

I LOVED listening to my Tigers in the 70's on the radio.
I would get myself all worked up and get some Charles chips and maybe some Fanta Orange or something and sit in my room and listen to those games !
John Ferguson was like the voice of God along with the stadium announcer.
Then Coach mac's show would come on Sunday morning !
I loved those teams 74-79 when I was a wee lad !

the "Voice Of The Tigers"
John Ferguson was the best of the best. He really had a way of making the radio seem like it was a live stadium experience; you could all but visualize every player and play as they happened. I remember his "circus catch!" commments to this day. Regardless of the record, win or lose, what a great time to be an LSU fan those days were. I liked Walter Hill, too. They worked together like a hand in glove.

Those games in old Tulane stadium, and the LSU crowd one side of willow. Tulane on other side both yelling go to hell
Those games were classics. I was a senior in HS and went to "the game" at Tulane Stadium (I think it was the last one I attended there). It was great - LSU won 21-7, but Tulane put up a plucky fight under the leadership of Sr. QB Bobby Duhon. LSU's 3 TD's were scored by TB Tommy "Trigger" Allen.

John Ferguson was such a presence in LSU lore in those days that even if you went to the game live, you brought your transistor radio so you could "hear" what was happening.

DadAnd I used to sit on the back patio in Magnolia Ar. He would have his Budweiser and Winstons going and I would drag my gold bean bag out. We would listen to all the games and if it was bad weather, we would take a ride or just sit in the driveway listening. I was 12 the year we finally beat bama after some 10 or 12 years and then blew out FSU and bowden for the Orange bowl bid. I remember John Ferguson yelling "the fans are throwing Oranges on the field!". The way he described it the field was covered in oranges. Now those were two memories of LSU football and time spent with my Dad I will never forget!

Wow, you brought back some memories! When first married, we lived in a house surrounded by hills. Saturday nights we'd drive to the top of one of them to pick up the broadcasts on the radio. Good times! (man, it got cold in that truck!)

This is what I remember about JF calling the game...

I think JF had a great voice and was a wonderful person. He bled purple and gold...but what I remember most are the crazy yardage calls!

I like Jim Hawthorne, but grew up listening to John Ferguson and his classic play by play sayings such as "he picked that ball out of the ozone." His call of the Bert Jones to Brad Davis pass to beat Ole Miss on the game's last play is priceless. I hope someone has a link to that call. I remember the Notre Dame game of 1970:
Walter Hill saying "and to give you the play by play, the voice of the Tigers, John Ferguson"..."Good evening from South Bend, Indiana. The ball is being teed up...." GREAT MEMORIES.
