There's only one question: Is Ed Orgeron a coach that could be elite?

If you believe he is the type of guy that could be considered an "elite" coach, that could win multiple NC's, or the very least multiple SEC titles and get to the CFP, that could help outscheme the Sabans, Urbans, and Dabos of the world, that could build the type of program that has LSU perennially in the CFP conversation at the end of the year...

If you believe "No" to all of that...then what the frick are we doing here? You go for a guy who you believe can be. You swing for the fences. And if it doesn't work out you go for that guy again.

Ed is a nice man. A great recruiter. I actually think he's a decent HC.

LSU can do better than decent.

So...do you believe O can be elite? Yes or No.

Far from elite. I honestly kind of want to try out Dino Barbers, I think he could become an elite headoach given the right resources.

With the right OC / DC and SC, perhaps.

LSU has the right DC in place. Another year with Canada and LSU is probably still in the playoff mix at this point in the year.

Orgeron has made mistakes and it looks like he'll continue to make mistakes.

I'm worried he hasn't learned from the mistakes that made him a failure at Ole Miss.

If he finishes 11-2 he deserves every benefit of the doubt he has what it takes to be elite one day. Not there yet.

He's an innovative OC away right now.

eta: That stood out for Bama Saturday. On top of having Saban and the best players. Their OC was calling plays perfectly. Running directly away from blitzes. Calling pass plays that find holes in the secondary. That freaking screen pass call was money. A good OC goes a long way. Meanwhile, Ensminger insisted on calling play-actions that took forever to develop.

he’ll never be perfect

Whether he’s elite or not depends on what he does at OC

The fact that we’re very capable of going 10-2 in a year where Vegas has us 7-5 in his second full year, im optimistic about his ability to prepare the team and make them play better than they are, because let’s be honest, we have no real playmakers on this team aside from Delpit maybe.

I think next years class helps with that, Stinglet and Emery are instant game changers and big play guys.

Wouldn't this kind of make him, by definition, not elite?

We’ve played 6 different O Line combinations this season

It’s not up to our normal standards but we only lose one guy, chemistry will get better, and we bring in a good OL class.

And Emery is the type of player who makes plays out of nothing, he’s going to be a hell of a lot closer to Hill/Guice than Brossette/Helaire

Of course not and the LSU leadership knew that when he was hired. Complete- “We don’t give a shite”

Coach O is what he is. Surrounded by elite coaching, I believe he can certainly be adequate. He will never be an "elite" HC, in my opinion. I really wish my earlier opinions had been misplaced.

Dabo does almost nothing offensively or defensively for Clemson yet is a top 3 coach in the country. Makes the right hires, always has the players ready and recruits well.. knows how to run the program

No, and as far as I was concerned with the hire, he was never meant to be a long term option. He was simply a way to bridge the gap and get enough money off the books for 3-4 years until we were able to do a hard reboot.
