Old fricks on here acting as if this #7 "tradition" started way back with Bert Jones (or before) don't know what the hell they're talking about or are being purposefully obtuse to throw around their wealth of knowledge on the history of LSU football.
Were there great players who wore #7? Obviously.
However, the passing of the torch that is embodied with the number is a recent thing, basically from one player to the next as a replacement of the former's greatness. Similar to how 18 has become almost a team captain deal, but less formal. Les and everyone is involved with giving the 18 jersey to a player. I don't believe that's the case with 7.
In fact, no one wore 7 in 2012 and 2013. Not sure if that's an indication that no one thought themselves worthy or if that's an indication that no one gave a shite since it's not actually a tradition. Probably the latter. But Buga was all but anointed by TM7 via Twitter to wear the number, as if it was a great honor, so it clearly has some recent significance, moreso than it ever has before.

Why in the hell does everything have to be either/or ?
It seems to have been a phenomenon since Bert Jones, even if it was unintentional for most of the last 40 years, just something that has happened. Now we look at it in retrospect and we recognize it for what it is.
Bert Jones was a leader and playmaker. So were/are the guys who have worn it since. What's the problem? I don't think ANY old-timer, like myself, has any issue whatsoever with the guys who wore it recently, we cheered for them, TOO. So why do younger people have a problem with us older guys? I hate that shite about this board, anybody who goes back before youngsters were born is "OOOOOOOOOOOLD" and that's the worst thing there is to most of the folks on this board.
Sorry. Why cain't we all get along????

This is why in the hell it is an "either or" argument. It was a coincidence before. Now it is calculated (seemingly).
Is this that difficult to comprestand?

Didn't Peterson and Mathieu want to start the #7 as a Tradition like #18 for LSU?
Thought they wanted to pass it down within the Secondary, but when Mathieu was dismissed the idea to pass it on died with him.

quote:Yep, starting with you. 7 was immortalized by Bert Jones and ironically, after him, Pat Lyons wore it, whose older brother, Paul was the other half of Charlie Mac's two QB system with, none other than Bert Jones! Another #7 was Steve Rehage, a slightly built, but ferocious Safety from Bonnabel High School, before Rondell Mealy. Fournette wears it solely to honor Mathieu, his hero from back home at St Aug.
AHHHH...youngsters....brush up on your LSU history ;)

While I do appreciate the extra credit history lesson, let's not pretend that the current era of LSU football players are wearing the jersey because of that.
7 is a popular # across all sports, & I appreciate the OP starting this thread so that I could reminisce on the '97 & '01 squad....and do a quick recap for those who weren't around during that awesome time in the early 2000's..
Again, thanks for sharing the way back-throwback info.
Edit: notice the " ;) " in my post you quoted = tongue firmly planted in cheek
