Defenses have to be smart, fast and disciplined.

The Bama RPO Slant taxes the decision making of the defensive players, particularly those assigned to the middle of the field.

Aranda is experimenting, evaluating and adjusting.

Players like Brooks and Mo Hampton NEED to show up and show out as SEC play ensues.

We had brilliant play from freshman on Championship runs in the past, and They NEED to be a prominent part of this 2019 Championship Opportunity.

Are Brooks and Meaux (Mo Hampton) cerebral and quick learners?

I think so...but playing time in the Vandy-Utah State stretch is very important.

They certainly are athletic and instinctive enough...

They are key to the defenses ability to adjust and perform in this changed game.

God forbid we don't ask kids to go out there and kill themselves for our entertainment.

Yes a new era for football. Like basketball has become a 3 point contest, football is about rpo.

well you start biting on that then they run a sluggo route and torch you.

no different than other option routes. burn a guy on a fly route come back next time if he stays behind you with a curl or comeback route where you have the leverage. these route options are done all the time based on what a WR and QB see.

Permanently? I imagine people said we would never see the option again when the Veer and Wishbone went away. Yet it still exists. Auburn made a championship game playing a variation of the T formation, which is as “old” and “out of date” as it gets.

Eventually, as the majority of defenses adjust and speed players become the most in-demand, lower-tier teams will go the opposite way and start playing other systems to gain an advantage with the players available to them. Remember, it was lower-tier teams that brought these offenses to the FBS and popularized the spread first. It was mid-tier FBS teams like UF (they were at the time), West VA, Houston, Oklahoma St and Texas Tech that popularized them before larger programs switched. Eventually, the opposite will happen and the cycle will start over. This isn’t a straight line.

All that said, there are enough big programs playing this way that the game has changed for the time being. However, that isn’t an excuse for not knowing assignments, not executing the basics and not dominating overmatched opponents. Right now, these are the difference in LSU not winning by two scores over Texas and rolling NWST for the entire game instead of one half.

I’m hoping that the struggles are almost intentional by Aranda to put these players in difficult situations and learn from their mistakes.
