The Freak is the first Louisiana "Mr. Football" at LSU since Charles Scott

And the first DL to ever receive the award.
The award has been hit and miss over the years -
Out of the 16 recipients over the years, only 6 have actually arrived at LSU, and 3 of those transferred elsewhere, 2 after being dismissed from the team (in Perrilloux's defense, only partially and no crimes of violence) for criminal conduct (Cecil Collins, the inaugural recipient, and Ryan Perrilloux), and 1 after only minimal time in the program (McConathy).
We got significant mileage from Bradie James and Charles Scott, and "The Freak" is a true freshman, playing well for us this year.
Of those that got away, Travis Minor, Brock Berlin and Joe McKnight all played for big league programs and made it into the NFL.
Miller, Matherne and Webster play/played for smaller schools in-state. Robert Lane (remember him?) played a number of positions at Ole Miss and can rightfully be called a miss or a bust. Mackey is at Ole Miss now, after a stint at EMCC and is struggling with off-the-field issues.
Does anybody know what happened to Byron Robertson, the 2000 recipient?

Nice catch - I was going to add a line after the guys who went pro - I guess all those "M" names kind of ran together.
7/16 Lousiana "Mr. Football" had a last name starting with "M". Weird.

Three years later I was in Vaught Hemingway watching LSU put up 40 while Lane played spot duty at fullback and tight end. I think that one turned out ok for the Tigers.
Yeah - people got their panties in a wad because we wanted Russell AND Flynn, and if that meant losing Lane, so be it (but he still had a scholarship offer).
Say what you want about Saban (and, certainly I have), but he and Jimbo Fisher made the "right call" on that one.

Went to my high school. Had a Texas offer under the condition that he not play basketball his senior year. He did anyway. He ended up getting into some trouble off the field and never really made it anywhere. Played at a small school I think. I played a little pick up basketball with him about a year ago. Still quick as can be. Complete waste of talent.

He holds the NATIONAL record for High Schools with the most sacks ever in a four year period. Miles is saving him for the BAMA game. Fa real.
