It was a thing of beauty at the game in real time. First, it was a really long review. And to fill all of that space, the stadium video guys kept showing over and over the pylon cam. The pylon cam was perfect because it SO CLEARLY showed him stepping out of bounds. Over and over they showed it - each time the crowd roaring its approval of the definitely-soon-to-be-announced overturn.

Finally, the ref comes back, and in somewhat awkward form, actually CONFIRMS the ruling on the field.

The melt was a beautiful thing to behold.

I Love LSU and I still don't know if it was the correct call.

It was correct, the timing was the question but he had the left foot back in play before he touched the ball.., and he knew it

The slightest force from the DB (causing the WR to step OB) is enough to allow the WR to re-establish himself inbounds.

The Bama DB #7 had his hand squarely on Moss's numbers and shoved him.

Absolutely forced Moss out. Absolutely a catch.

It was the correct call.

Here's all you need to know:

The ruling on the field was that it was a catch AND that he was forced out of bounds.

The latter is not reviewable.

Thus, the only question becomes: was he inbounds when he caught it (as he is allowed to re-establish himself since he was forced out.)

The review clearly shows that he was inbounds when he caught it....call CONFIRMED.

For good measure, even if he was NOT forced out, the replay clearly shows the ball was tipped...so he is allowed to re-establish himself and touch the ball second anyway.

Yes -- one of the best moments of being in that stadium! Bama having the hope for 5 minutes ripped out of them completely.

"But, but, but the SEC office is in Birmingham! We always get those calls!"

He was forced out while the ball was in the air, should have been PI.

The bama fans whining about how this should be reviewable should note that it was also PI.

I was going to make a thread on this earlier

If he is pushed out he can re-establish himself in the field and be the first person to “touch” the football

Any sort of force counts as being pushed out like the above poster said the DB was clearly jockeying for position to the ball and may have affected his steps

So he gets a pass

HOWEVER

If he Willingly stepped out of bounds, he can re-establish himself inbounds but can not be the first player to “touch” the football

Even if you were - as a Bama fan - trying to argue the point that he stepped out of bounds on his own accord (which he did not)... you can clearly see The defensive back touches the ball mid-air on replay therefore Moss was not the first player to touch the ball anyway

So any and all arguments against this being LSU ball are disproven

Pushed out, comes back in, pass deflected by DB, he catches it while in bounds

..... the fact the pass was somewhat deflected makes this an even more insanely athletic grab

That is why the call on the field is so important even with replay.

Some of the replays are so difficult to rule for or against that they simply defer to the initial on-field ruling.

If you haven't grasped the explanation yet after having it explained to you repeatedly, then you might just be stupid, and that's ok!

If forced out by defender, receiver can re-establish and be first offensive player to touch the ball
