Good work by the Levee and Macklin. About the simplest way to go would be some variation of the Tampa 2. You basically are playing two corners and two backers underneath. The two safeties have 1/2 of the field, and a backer has deep middle.

We’d get toasted.

ETA; Fuggit, we get toasted already. Why not?

Tampa 2 mixed with Palms 2 would be best. You could run those two defenses and mess with an offense. Only problem is the deep 1/3 which is hard to cover in the middle of the field

Hey Levee, I finished coaching high school ball in 1987, what is Palms2? Give me the basics.

Yeah your MLB absolutely has to be a stud to run this. Modern day offenses will have him chasing the seams all day. I don’t think we’re there yet.

I wish they’d mainly go man across the board with 2 deep. Cox and Stevens at LB.

Ok Levee, Palms involves reading patterns to determine the coverage. If that is what we are trying to do now, it does not seem to be working. For the time being, do Tampa 2 with the most physical and best tackling people that we have.

Palms 2 is a two high shell. It’s cover two or four. Or six. Depending on what the #2 receiver on either side does.

If number two cuts underneath in or out, the CB reads and stays in the flat using inside leverage on the #1 WR

If number two runs vertical, the CB drops into coverage and the SAM or Will LB plays a little wider in zone drop.

Example. 2x2 set and four verticals, you’d end up in cover 4.

And you could end up with one half playing cover two and the other half playing 3 or four.

The weaknesses are underneath crossing routes.

That’s the basics.

We do run palms currently. It’s in the playbook.

You could run

2 high shell showing Tampa 2 and then roll to cover 3.

You could also show cover 2 and play 2 man.

Simple stuff works.

Levee, I am correct in saying that in Palms you are essentially reading the slot? I do agree with you that you can easily go from a cover 2 zone to three deep with a pre-called rotation or rotation to strength or to field. I could only see playing cover four in obvious pass situations, but I would rather just go nickel or dime.

Number 2 eligible receiver. Could be a TE or back out of the backfield. Cover 3 is the best TBH, but like any of them, you can’t run it exclusively. People will run four verts and sail/flood corners till your eyes bleed.

The only coverage you can sometimes get away with every down is CAT coverage. My cats got your cat. Lol
