quote:True. Last night there were ALWAYS 2 LSU defenders who "bracketed" the punter - one left and one right - but they always stayed about 3-5 yards to the outside. Never really posed a threat.
And I'll add that we never ever go for a block on punts.

Kickoffs is one of the few areas of concern so far. Maybe Wing can kickoff when he gets back. Or burn the FR's redshirt. Saving that field position for a championship caliber team is certainly worth 1 year of eligibility for a kicker. That said, I don't see any way this can be a reflection on the ST coach. Either you have the leg or you don't--he can't help that. Impressed with Alleman's FG kicking, though.
And we miss PP way more in the return than we do on defense.

I can't remember ever seeing us setting up to block a punt, we always set up for the return, but what's the point if we can't get good down field blocking and our returners are losing yardage? Just pin your ears back every time and go for the block, you're bound to have an increased chance at that then getting good field position on a poor return.
good point
there was NO REASON to not go all out for the punt block with 9 seconds left in the half. Even if Rockey D smashes the punter for a 15 yarder, MSU is not going 50 yards on our defense in one play.

I know a junior in high school that can put it in the endzone every time. Im going to give him a call.

Yeah, I didn't understand that pre halftime clock management, but that's Les. 3rd down play ends with 22 seconds, let 7 seconds run off the clock, call timeout. Don't go for the block, and we're chancing Matheiu fumbling a punt with no good blocking setup.

Average field position following kickoffs was the 33 for MSU. That's counting the short kick.

I'll never understand how a program like LSU can't get someone to handle a kickoff. I've seen better distance from 250 lb toe kickers from Glen Oaks.

...this is mostly coaching I would think at this level..I say that because of the penalties which showed up last night and are a result of "lack of discipline" in practice by coaches.
"Practice does not make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect"
It appears obvious to me that we are not having perfect practices, we are allowing small stuff to go uncalled and it is therefore showing up in games.
We had a great game against UO, but if these little details are not looked at on a consistent, weekly basis, they will pop up again...that's what I saw last night.
It is human nature to relax, we must drive "mental toughness" and details in each of our performance/practices.

There is a difference between perfect and saying things happened that did not, you really could watch the games, they are on TV.
We need TM to learn a fair catch, and let the kicker from NW kick off instead of Alleman. That is it.
No need for calling the component "garbage" just to try to look like you are clever.
"hey look at me, I think I found something new to bitch about"
Your like a fricking toddler.

No, no, no. Tard says every kick went out to the 40.
Posted on 9/16/11 at 8:24 am to tigerfoot
might as well had been te 40

He'll, we just go with may as wells now.
We may as well pass for 350 and kick it thru the end zone. Voila.
Just because folks want to see suck, does not make it so.

yeah the kickoffs and punts were bad last night. Wing's hurt though so that is part of the problem.
