Miami's defense was allowing short gains. Cornerbacks off receivers, safeties playing deep, linebackers covering middle of the field. In other words, 180 degrees opposite of Pelinis defense.

FSU was able to move the ball. But got frustrated when the field was compressed. By the 3rd quarter they were playing into Miami's plan.

Why did we not make a similar adjustment at halftime?

Something I noticed in relation to your point, and it may have changed later in the game, I don't think Miss. State ever had to really put a sustained drive together.

They spent so much time teaching what we saw that they didn’t work on zone concepts especially shifting between in certain situations unless 3rd and long a few times and couldn’t get a rush with 3. The twists, etc took too long and allowed the QB to throw to open spots. The corners couldn’t cover the taller receivers.

This defense was abused. But the coaches were the issue as much or more than the players. That was Orgeron’s defensive line was it not? He coaches them.

Grip and rip didn’t work and they didn’t know what to do.
