I can't stand it when people root for an SEC rival because it's an SEC team.

Like when Florida played Oklahoma in the championship a couple years ago. Why the HELL would any LSU fan root for UF?

Because if the SEC isn't successful, and LSU is, then LSU is just another Boise St. or TCU.

I don't want to see Florida or Alabama become a dynasty, of course not. But since the BCS started, Tennessee, LSU twice, Florida twice, and Alabama have all won titles, with Auburn deserving one as well and possibly winning one this year. That's parity. When 5 of 12 teams in the conference have won a BCS title or have gone undefeated, do you really think a kid is going to have an easy time picking? There's no clear-cut go-to school in the SEC. As long as the SEC has several contenders, which we do, then recruiting won't be an issue.

The SEC pride movement can be attributed in large part to the conference being regulated to second tier status for years behind the media darlings Big-10 and Pac-10.

It's a multitude of reasons, but I think it's this combined with the South in general. The rest of the country thinks we're a bunch of uneducated, toothless, country bumpkins. If you go based on averages, we may be a little less educated, a little worse in dental hygiene, and a little more rural. However, I'd like to say to the rest of the country that always ridicules the South...

SEC football is a source of regional pride. Every school does the "SEC" chant when winning something from that I've seen. It can't be a fluke.

The us against them mentality is understandable to a degree but pulling for teams who are vying for the same recruit as LSU is plain silly IMO.

I don't think most SEC fans actually root for the other teams. They will pick sides though. This keeps the pride and accolades in the house.

Also, not all recruits are SEC vs. SEC. We recruit a ton in Texas for example. Which conference would you rather play in?

Some people touched on it indirectly when talking about being in the South, but I think part of it comes down to having friends or family who went to some of those other schools. If it doesn't affect LSU, I'm inclined to pull by proxy for my the teams my siblings or cousins support.

Below is my general "ranking" system when I'm deciding who to pull for in a game. Obviously this can be modified based on a specific situation where a win/loss helps LSU, but it's my general philosophy.

1. Did I go there?
2. Did any of my immediate family go there?
3. Did any of my extended family go there?
4. Did any of my close friends go there?
5. Have I ever lived in or visited the city/state long enough to develop a fondness (or animosity) for its fans?

FWIW, I think this is the real reason I don't really care anything about the PAC-10. It's not because I don't respect Oregon, Stanford, USC, etc.; it's that I don't feel any sort of personal connection to those games. Late in the season I pay a little more attention to other conferences, but only because of the games' effect on LSU or other SEC teams.
