But athletic money is not shared with academics.

Why do I keep having to correct so many informed that insist on trying to sound like they are?

Athletics give nearly $30 million to academics each year at LSU. I know this is a drop in the bucket compared to the overall budget, but it is better than the money going the other way.

Come on man. The guy is a professor who doesn't like sports, and is whining about why football gets so much attention. All the while he's collecting a big fat salary provided by the taxpayers for teaching and researching God knows what. He's a liberal.

I graduated from LSU in 1977.

I'll say the same for you, TUba, and TxTiger. Ya'll are either very young or smoke a lot of pot, maybe both.

ave you looked at the salary of a tenured professor these days? Compare that to the average salary for all jobs in Louisiana. And people wonder why the cost of higher education continues to skyrocket.

Really? You want to compare the salary of a highly educated person to people that may or may not have completed high school. What we should do is compare professors to private section people in the same field. For example, economics profs. to private sector economists. I think you would be surprised how much less profs. make.

By the way, I used to be liberal back in my college days, mostly because I believed all the crap I heard from my professors and the media. I used to come home from college and argue with my conservative Dad - he'd shake his head and say, "This is what I'm wasting my hard-earned dollars on!"
So are you an example of what happens when you move to Montana to start up your own whacked militia group?....since we are playing name that stereotype.

There ya go...you missed me on every mark. nice try though. those blinders are working well for ya!

Oops...need to correct that. You missed me on one of those (you guess which one Brainiac). And you completely missed me on the liberal one.

If the profs want to make as much as in the private sector, then let them go compete for a job in the private sector. It's a free country (at least for now) - they make their own choices in life. The difference is a person's salary in the private sector ultimately is based on their producing something that people willingly pay for. A government employeee is paid for by money confiscated from the people.

I'm not a member of a militia GROUP, but I am a member of the militia, as defined by the founding fathers as a free man who owns and is well-trained in the use of firearms.

You bet! I suppose you're one of those who think the Constitution was written by a bunch of old rich white guys, and is no longer relevant in today's world.

Oh hell, you can't be serious. Look, I'm a registered Republican, voted for Bush twice and McCain this last time. I have a poli sci degree from LSU and every professor in that department is a Democrat (moderate to liberal). Did they "ruin my mind." No freakin way. What they did do is make me make damn sure my counter-arguments were well thought out and made me challenge my preconceptions. But professors have been and always will be more liberal than the general population. You have to be to waste that intelligence on not-profitable activity! It doesn't mean they are "ruining the minds of our young people."

Well said. There's nothing like the spirit of competition to sharpen our wits. But I disagree with your comment about how they were wasting their intelligence. They were not in it for the money, but for the intelectual satisfaction.

I'm a college professor, a proud LSU alum, and a huge football fan. I think we're being very unfair to the original professor in question. It's not his job to give a crap about football, just like it isn't Les Miles job to give a crap about academics (yes, I know that technically it is, but is anyone here going to get their panties in a wad over player's GPA unless it affects their eligibility?)

FACT: If you teach at a research 1 institution, your research is MUCH more important to whether you are granted tenure than your teaching/relationship with students. It sounds weird to say this, but at a place like LSU, teaching the students is NOT necessarily more important than the amount of academic prestige and recognition that the professor brings to the university. Just count the number of classes that are taught by crappy teaching assistants. Also, it's a professor's JOB to PROFESS their opinion.

FACT: LSU would still exist without the football team. (It would certainly not be as wealthy, but it certainly would not close either). The opposite is not true.

Geaux Tigers

p.s. I'm willing to bet that there are starters on our football team that don't give a damn about academics. Where is the 11 pages of outrage and name calling over that?

First of all, I am not a prof. I am an engineer in the private sector.

Second of all, no body ever said that the prof wanted to make more than they do. Only that you can't say that they make huge salaries, because they don't.

Lastly, if you were actually informed you would know that a vast majority of the professor's pay comes from private endowments and not tax money.
So yes, their pay is based them producing something that someone is willingly paying for.

confiscated from the people? What the hell do you think this country, any state, or any city would be like with no taxes to pay....never mind discussion for a different board.

and conservatism is a disease...one that attacks the mind, the heart and the soul of liberty. conservatives are blood clots in the veins of progress, so crawl back into your cave and turn on rush and leave the critical thinking to those who have prepared for it.

I'm not against government, I just believe in limited government as did the founding fathers. Our government is now operating way outside the original intent of the Constitution.
