some profs are frustrated that while the football team has all the resources it needs to compete on a top level nationally, the college itself does not. many more people would rather donate $ to the athletic dept. than the college. they probably sometimes think that LSU is a football team situated on a college campus rather than a college that has a football team. from what i understand, this is a common feeling among profs, esp at southern colleges. i think they have a point, whatever their political leanings. however, it is what it is and LSU has certainly raised its academic standards and i pray they continue. i also hope that our athletic success continues. i am a greedy sob.

Great post. I completely agree. I want both. This means stop the budget cuts.

Have you looked at the salary of a tenured professor these days? Compare that to the average salary for all jobs in Louisiana. And people wonder why the cost of higher education continues to skyrocket.

So you are saying smart people don't deserve to get paid in proportion to their talents?

That argument is so........liberal.

I mean, replace professors with doctors and see what that sounds like. Would it still be something you agree with? No, probably not.

I think it was Bear Bryant who once said in response to some thing similar to this subject....."I hadn't seen a math department yet that could bring the kind of money to the university that football does"

I'm quoting but really shouldn't cause that might not be the exact line but was the jist if it

as i posted on page 2 of this thread.....and Bear was right.

But athletic money is not shared with academics. Athletic money is spread around the athletic department.

So the Bear's quote is stupid.

Well, if the liberals have their way with our health care system this is exactly what will happen. Doctors will become government employees and the quality of health care will be about as bad as that provided by most other government programs.

By the way, I'm not against college professors in general. Those in the hard sciences are generally fine. It's the liberal arts professors that are wackos.

If you dont see ANY benefit of the AD than you are just not willing to try to see the other side of the argument.......and I feel sorry for you.

The Bear was right.

OK so you have basically proved my point, which is that you wouldn't agree with paying doctors disproportionately to market-driven salary levels.

Nowhere in here, however, do you acknowledge that the same principle should be true for all professions, including university professors.

It sounds like you pretty much are.

And now you are making gross over-generalizations.

Seriously, you are being both inconsistent and overly simplistic. Your level of thinking about this subject is remarkably low, which indicates you probably should have paid more attention to those college professors you hate so much.

Sure that was true for Alabama. They had Bear Bryant. Most football teams aren't that successful.

LSU is fortunate that its athletic department is profitable. This is not the case at most universities.

Actually it's you that are revealing your total ineptness with logic. You can't even see the difference between the free market and the government. I'd be all for paying college professors whatever the FREE MARKET dictates. But they are GOVERNMENT employees, supported by the taxpayers, and thus not subject to the free market and all its benefits, and yes, risks.

Incredible.

What about the ones supported by endowments?

quote:

LSU's endowment is a pool of funds which is collected by the Foundation and invested to achieve a return. The return is then given to LSU as a means of academic support. Essentially, the endowment is an ever-growing, perpetual source of academic funds for LSU which never goes away. The endowment currently stands at $338 million. Creating an investment return on that $338 million is how the LSU Foundation provides a large portion of its support for LSU academics.

The guys on this list
LINK

are private donors, not government employees.

I would submit you don't have a clue.
