A friend of mine went to Arkansas. I went up there to help him move into his apt before classes started. We went down to the stadium to go check out that "Hog of fame" area... or whatever it was called. Well the football team was practicing. He pointed out Clint Storners maroon vette with no plates. He joked about a few of the players had nice arse rides and didnt even have license plates on them.

Why would you assume it's against the rules for a college student to accept a car loan?
... only ones with abnormal terms. Otherwise, cars could be given away to prospects under these terms all the time as a way to lure them in a wink-wink, nudge-nudge way.

I live uptown in New Orleans, next to Tulane. You might want to rethink this statement the next time you come to N.O. ! Those kids drive some NICE cars.
A lot of kids at expensive, private schools will have expensive cars. I was referring more specifically to LSU.

I'm not reading this entire thread, but JaMarcus drove a Tahoe which was stolen right before the Sugar Bowl. He was interviewed on one of the local tv stations about it.
it was stolen before the 2006 Florida game

Anyone remember Brandon Bass' Mercedes? Dude came out of a rough neighborhood and Capital high, but somehow had a bad arse Benz. HMM...
A clever agent got a hold of Brandon at a young age and convinced his mom to give him up for adoption. The agent then adopted Brandon and was able to give him a good life with the promise of returns from pro contracts. His Benz was officially registered to the agent.

Every single scholarship LSU basketball player drives an awesome car.

In 88, Tyrone Hughes was being recruited by LSU, Nebraska, Oklahoma and others while at St. Aug. Nebraska had a convertible white Corvette with two white chicks sitting inside, right outside the school, in the middle of the 7th ward
They were seductively telling him, "Come on, come on"

With car loans, there is rarely such a thing as an abnormal term. Anyone who can walk into a dealership can ask for and receive a balloon payment. It's easy for college students because they have higher earning potential than a high school dropout over the life of the loan. A highly recruited scholarship athlete may be viewed as having even more earning potential if not a higher likelihood of paying because of the connections to a high profile and high revenue generating organization.
If profit was the only motive, car dealers would do it all the time with athletes at big colleges. They are probably fighting each other to have Johnny Stud driving around an Escalade with ABC Cadillac branded on the back. The worse case scenario has the collection agencies applying pressure on the athletic dept with threats of starting an investigation into how this athlete was led to believe that affording this vehicle would not be a problem. With generous boosters eager to help their teams and curry favor, payments can be made in a way to incentivize that everyone keep quiet about it.
So it may not be the boosters that start the gift giving - it can just as easily be hungry car dealerships with an appreciation for brokering a deal and leveraging payment with ordinary loans that carry a higher likelihood of being paid off.
So it ends up being the end result that can lead to the appearance of a recruiting violation, when the truth is that the athlete leveraged his value AFTER the recruiting had ended. No doubt violations can still occur, but they don't always start with the intention to dangle cars for signatures.

Takin you waaaay back..
Chris Jackson (bb player) had a brand new 3 series Beamer. He came from a low income, single parent household in Moss Point, MS.
Vernel Singleton had a sweet (at that time) brand new Honda Prelude his senior year.
Shaq drove a beater 2 dr Ford Explorer till his last year at LSU. It had an airbrushed license plate on the front that said: The Real Deal and had an image of a poker hand on it. He got a new 4 dr. Explorer with a very LOUD stereo his final year...
Shaq>>>>>>Jamarcus. In so many ways that I do not care to enumerate them all.

Also, many athletes get jobs at dealerships and can drive demo cars like a salesman can.
Nothing new. Or illegal.

I find it VERY odd and coincidental that an LSU student could get an open line to Cowherd much less get through their screening process. Yes it is realistic that this kid made it through a couple of hours of dialing to get on the show but I'm not buying it. Lets see..USC is getting a bad rap...lets mention LSU as well.....and yes I do think ESPN hates LSU.
"they're out there."
