so I guess luck is a major factor too
Genetics also plays a role.
For all of you overused guys.......where is the list where all the players who weren't overused blew their arms out?
This ought to be easy to find.
The vast majority of pitchers at the pro level never played college ball so technically, they weren't overused. But they still blow arms out.
It's all a guess......there are too many factors to pinpoint overuse in college as the major factor. If that were the case, the pros wouldn't draft college pitchers high because they have been overused but college pitchers go in the 1st round routinely.

The pitchers mechanics and their offseason workout ethic have more to do with injuries during MLB than being overused in college.
Sutcliffe is just looking to make a headline--nothing more.

yeah nothing makes headlines like talking about retired college baseball coaches that the majority of America has never even heard of

quote:Completely agree. My brother who is a collegiate pitcher has visited with Sherry Werner of TMI Sports Performance, the Texas Rangers' physical therapist. She is commonly referred to as 'the pitching doctor' and advises multiple pro clubs on mechanics. According to ball players, 'whatever she says, you do' ( ot: my brother met Ben Sheets there on one visit ). Anyhow, point is, her stress to my brother was all about leg strength and using the legs correctly, to increase velocity and take strain off the arm.
Still, I think there is plenty of merit to the positions Ryan takes. He was the master of building leg strength to take pressure off the arm, and that's often an overlooked aspect of the debate. His legs had as much to do with his longevity as did his arm.

Prior was also on the boydsworld overused study list with Mestepey from college and didn't break down for 5 years just like Ben. Maybe some people just take longer to break down.
sure no doubt, you are a Cub fan that knows more about Prior than me, what lead to his breakdown in 2006?
IMHO the difference between ben mcdonald and strasburg is Ben never was able to throw an effective offspeed or breaking pitch. If I remember correctly he hurt his arm trying to throw split fingered fastballs. Strasburg has an effective curve and a changeup but needs MLB polishing.

As a cub fan, this was a big mystery to me.

Maximus, is there a LSU coach that you don't have a problem with?

no clue. Most thought it was how much Dusty had him throw right off the bat in the league. I think steroids might have played a big part for him too.
Otherwise, people in this thread can throw out all the Nolan Ryan said this and said that crap because Prior was the star pupil of Tom House who was the Nolan Ryan approved know it all of pitching mechanics. I think i still have my Nolan Ryan/Tom House Fastball VHS tape at my parent's house. Might put it on EBay.

So you are saying that there are much more youth injuries now because they are all now using bad technique?

quote:Every kid wants to throw hard or throw nasty breaking pitches, but very few are instructed on how to increase velocity or properly control the flight of the ball. This is not a new scenario, but what is new, as compare to days past, is the publicity and thusly an increase in the pressure to perform at a certain level.
Another "major problem" in youth sports, Cain said, is use of the radar gun. College scouts and professional scouts emphasize speed and maybe not proper mechanics or learning how to pitch, causing young athletes to over throw and risk injury, he explained. Cain thinks the radar gun should be banned in youth sports.

During the Bosox/Detroit baseball game tonight, Rick Sutcliffe blamed Ben Mcdonald's injuries during his pro career and general ineffectiveness on being overused at LSU? Is This true?
-------------
Don't know who said it, but it's the absolute truth!!!!

Remember when Sutcliffe showed up on the air piss drunk?
Sutcliffe: [chuckles] The best city in the world, Mud. Where is it?
Mud: San Diego.
Sutcliffe: Right here, man. You can't beat it. George Clooney. You been readin' about all that? You been seein' that?
Matt: George Clooney?
Sutcliffe: Yeah. He's up there with um... He's up there with the Congress. He's trying to get everybody to go over there... and solve that thing. Mud, you're the best, man. Anybody on Earth that doesn't like Mark Grant... They got... They got problems. Matty! What're you still doing here in San Diego? [interrupting] Red Baron, you were... Hey, by the way, you were...[cross-talk] Matty!
Matt: ...the answer to a trivia question earlier.
Sutcliffe: No-no-no, Matty.
Matt: We were... We were at Dodgers Stadium...
Sutcliffe: Everybody on Earth has been trying to steal you.
Matt: We were at Dodgers Stadium...
Sutcliffe: The Dodgers, the Cubs. ESPN.
