A loose ball that touches anything out of bounds is dead. The goal post is out of bounds. An exception to this rule states that a try or field goal that hits the goal post and still goes through is successful. FYI - I officiated football for 25 years.

By definition, a one point try is a field goal, but only counts one point. A "two point conversion" is, by definition, a touchdown. But it only counts two points. The terms "extra point", "two point conversion", "forward lateral", "lateral", and many other commonly used terms do not appear in the rule book.

I get your point, but I don't think you meant this literally. If the ball touches an out-of-bounds player or official, it is dead. If it touches a player or official in bounds, it is still live.
Edit- I see your correction above.

Thanks for the correction. A loose ball that touches anything out of bounds is dead. If a player with the ball touches anything out of bounds, other than another player or an official, the ball is dead.

Kinda like in baseball, pop up hits the fence or back stop, dead ball. What if a punt hits the big screen at Jerry's World?

Also, isn't it true that you can stand a player at the crossbar and he can jump (unassisted) and block a low field goal attempt.
Agreed it would be an amazing timing/athletic play, but it will happen one day on a long game winning attempt..

What about if the ball hits the camera guide wire?

Dead ball, replay the down

Happened on MNF on a kickoff the first year the overhead cam was used
Officials ordered a re-kick, and announced that the camera must stay behind all of the action from that point forward in that game
The next week it was a league wide rule
ETA, behind meaning in the offensive backfield, or behind the punter or kicker

I found this
quote:
NCAA rules prohibit the blocking of field goals at the crossbar by a player in the end zone (which is not always the case). This is an unusual rule. Leaping at the crossbar was declared illegal by the NFL (in 1969?), after it was in vogue for about a year. In 2003, the NFL also enforced a "running forward and leaping" ban for the protection of the airborne attackers and the kickers alike. The only legal block is hitting the ball coming off the foot, or jumping straight up.

The ball has to be live. On a FG or extra point, if the ball hits the uprights or crossbar, then bounces through, the kick's good, right? If the ball were dead instantly upon touching either, the kick could not then be good.
Edit: I see JCT covered this already.
