Just looked it up. If a person graduated from a Louisiana high school, goes out of state and transfers back, they are still eligible for tops. I even found the application. Lester is wrong for like the 5th time in a row.

quote:

Hilliard & Beck are the only eligible Srs for TOPS.

Beck is a 5th year Sr, the chances he is still on tops are minuscule

Beck very well could be on an academic scholarship. He has been on the SEC honor roll his entire career.

Regardless, there is nothing from the article blurb you posted that has Mainieri quoted as saying Beck and George are receiving athletic scholarship money. Here is the article. LINK

The author of that article is talking about COVID affecting college baseball rosters and then includes some quotes from a Paul Mainieri zoom call. If you want to post the zoom call and actually quote Mainieri saying those two guys, specifically, are receiving part of the 11.7, then by all means. But stop saying what you posted is a quote straight from Paul's mouth because it wasn't.

I think you can start out of state but I think you only get a 1 year grace

Assuming he was eligible out of HS

I admit I was wrong though. I said most of these seniors were not getting a cut of the 11.7. It’s not most. It’s all of them. Even if they did get money last year, the money they get this year does not count against the 11.7 for the rest of the team. Again, I was wrong.

Wrong again. You just lose the semesters.

quote:

You must complete this Application if you graduated from high school, met the academic requirements for a TOPS Award, enrolled for the first time as a full-time student at an accredited out-of-state college or university, and have returned to Louisiana and enrolled in an eligible Louisiana college or university; OR if you were eligible for a TOPS award and enrolled for the first time as a full-time student in an eligible Louisiana college or university, subsequently enrolled in an accredited out-of-state college or university, and then returned to Louisiana.

The criteria to be eligible for a TOPS award as a Returning Student is on the reverse side of this Application. Please read carefully before completing the Application. If you have questions, please send an e-mail to custserv@la.gov. If you are awarded, your period of eligibility will be reduced by the number of semesters or terms that you attended an out-of-state college or university.

Don't think you'll like seeing this Lester...

quote:

The Tigers have exactly two (2) seniors on this year's team that just had its season wiped out.

Mainieri said only one, relief pitcher Matt Beck, is on scholarship, a half scholarship at that, which is typical. The other is a walk-on, pitcher Aaron George.

So does that mean Beck is the only one that has a scholarship that doesn’t count to the total? Hilliard, Fontenot and the others would still count toward the 11.7 if they had any right?

This is where Lester's quote comes from. That article is referencing the same zoom call, btw

quote:

The oddity is that the ruling would theoretically be more help to those mid-majors (with more seniors) than the traditional baseball powers. But many of those schools, Mainieri said, don't even fund all of the 11.7 scholarships that are available now.

"It doesn't mean a school has to give them the money (for the extra year)," Mainieri said. "A lot of schools won't be able to afford to pay for seniors again. We will."

why? He was on half scholarship last year in 2020. This call took place last April.

I think you really struggle reading comprehension in your futile efforts to argue nonsensical points

Nice dodge on George though. Spent 3+ pages arguing that point. "straight from Paul's Mouth" right? Oof

I never said Beck wasn’t on scholarship. I only said George and Doughty weren’t. My talk of Beck had to do with his eligibility for tops. Get it together man.

I was about to quote this. He talks about paying for seniors in terms of funding scholarships something mid majors don’t do anyway. He saying lsu is lucky to be able to still afford extra scholarships that are available because of seniors.

I think Lester just thinks it makes sense from a roster management standpoint to start pulling money from our better players so we can cut walk-ons and replace them with scholarship JUCO players still available in June. If Beck was receiving a 50% scholarship his junior season while also receiving TOPS as an in-state athlete, there's no telling what OOS guys like Crews, Hill, Arnold, etc are receiving. But yeah let's piss those guys off to make room for a guy no one was giving a scholarship to prior.
