I do not understand why coaches teach hitters to think so much at the plate.

Because you have less than a second to hit a 85-95mph projectile moving in different directions with a cylinder stick that has a small sweet spot.

If you don't think at the plate, you've already lost at the plate.

The best part is that you don't understand how you're proving yourself wrong by bringing that up.

Yeah ok

Beetle Bailey and Skip taught work on the fundamentals in the cage. Simply trust it in the batter's box. Same concept. Stop all the thinking in the box

Skip was a pitching coach moron.

He didn't do shite with the hitters in the cage.

Beetle taught it.

Skip was the Head Coach clown. Pretty sure he could overrule something if he wanted to

Not taking away from offensive struggles, but the day games are brutal with the sunlight/shadow from the mound to the plate.

think at the plate

All of your thinking has to occur before you set up in the box. It occurs in the cage, in live hitting, and even as you prepare to enter the box. Your conscious mind sets conditions and suggests to your subconscious mind. Your conscious mind sets parameters for your subconscious. Then it shuts down and lets your subconscious do what it's really good at - REACT.

Your eyes record raw data and send it to the subconscious which analyzes and reacts appropriately and accurately to that data. The conscious mind is way too slow to do this effectively. It also causes tension in the muscles and slows reaction even more.

When they call someone really good at contact a "natural", what makes them good is ability to see the ball in this way.
