Baker Mayfield or Tua Tagovailoa makes that throw, everyone is gushing about how great a read and pass it was. So I'm not going to get sucked into how the Auburn LB should've played it. He did what he did. Burrow took advantage.

You're probably right here, but I don't watch it that way. If we're parsing together a putrid completion percentage by drawing upon every excuse in the book, surely we can be critical of completed passes that were lucky.

I think Burrow himself would tell you he got away with one there. That being said, every QB gets lucky at times.

Fair enough. I agree.

But I just don't think that one qualifies.

Burrow hit Dillon in stride, so he obviously put the ball where he wanted it to go.

Was he lucky that the Auburn LB was caught flat-footed and couldn't make the play? I'd say "no." Because, well, that's the point of running crossing routes behind LBs.

They were playing zone coverage and the Auburn LB was clearly responsible for the middle of the field. Dillon was crossing from the left side to the right side of the field. The pass was placed right in the "soft spot."

Exactly. Ball was thrown in stride to the open spot. Nothing lucky about that

I do, obviously, but it's not the end of the world.

Nearly every difference you mentioned between Burrow and Etling is explained by a difference in scheme. Is it really a knock on Etling that Canada's offense created high percentage passes?

I just charted his throws vs Auburn -

One throw away
Middle of the field - 6/11
Sideline short/intermediate - 4/10
Sideline deep - 2/7
Behind the LOS - 3/6 w/ a drop

It's mediocre. Mediocre is fine if we keep the TOs down, but we've had a mediocre QB for 2 years. My only point in this thread is to say Burrow has yet to prove he's better than Etling. He's only been here a few weeks, no argument there, and I surely hope he proves to be better than Etling, but it hasn't happened yet.

o. I'd actually argue Etling was the better QB so far.

Well there goes your credibility.

“assume the worst”

I am as excited bout 3-0 and #6 as the next guy, but a #100 in the nation and #14 in the SEC passing game has to improve if we are going to win the West.
