I'm going to be in Monterey the weekend of the Alabama game, is it worth driving up to watch with y'all?

I've gone to the watch parties at Northstar Cafe a few times and it's always been fun. That said, it's a two hour--admittedly beautiful at times--drive to SF. I wouldn't do it.

ETA - Brophy's in Carmel is good little sports bar.

We watched a game at Northstar Cafe a couple years ago while we were in SF, it was a non-conference game, so it was a bit subdued, but still a fun time. One of the alums was cooking red beans outside. Good people.

Since we’re playing Bama, and based on the first three weeks of the season, I leave the “is it worth the two hour drive” up to you.

Used to drive 4 hours one way back in the day into Manhattan on a regular basis to go to Turtle Bay or Legends...

I would like to come into SF if only for the day. How's the parking situation and would I have to deal with a lot of street vagrants in that area?

Northstar Cafe is nothing close to Legends. I also don’t know what restrictions they have right now on capacity.

As long as you stay around Northstar Cafe and North beach, you’re fine. You will hit some vagrants if you wander south on Columbus and over to Broadway. The worst areas for that in my opinion are Union Square and Tenderloin.

Never parked in that area, so can’t help there.

I’d be surprised if bars are open at that point. If they are North Star is the only real LSU venue I know of. Parking would be okay if you don’t mind looking around for a bit & a 10-20 minute walk. Not many homeless around that area, but still don’t leave any bags or valuable in your vehicle.

When I lived In the Bay Area North Star was pretty fun for games. For big games the place gets standing room only packed. Last year for the national championship it was super fun because the bar across the street happens to be the official Clemson alum bar.

Im pretty sure the North Star cafe is shut down just like most bars in the city. Dont waste the drive.

Haven't been up to the North Star for several years, but always had a blast when I do go.

Here is a current Yelp review:

10/8/2020

Love, love, love Northstar. And not just because I'm an LSU fan and it's an LSU bar. Such a solid dive bar, but one going back a long time, to the 1800's. Particular shout-out to London, one of the bartenders, who is an absolute rockstar, you're in such good hands. Their sidewalk Covid setup is great - with TVs and high tables and lights, it's got the right feel to it to let you drink good Guinness and almost feel like you're in a comfortable dive bar.

So outdoor/sidewalk seating, like most bars and restaurants in CA at present. Don't know how many people they are presently accommodating, but it will be limited, may want to give them a call to find out (415) 397-0577.

Please note that SF and most of the Bay Area have mask requirements and I highly doubt if SF will be loosening the Covid requirements by November. Unfortunately, it is what it is.

Have fun on your trip to Monterey.
