Appreciate the strong grasp for the obvious. Prevent works in the pros b/c the clock continues to run. A 10 yd. gain is like a time-out in college. I agree - the automatic first down w clock stoppage needs to go away.
To better appreciate your logic LSU did not take advantage in the final 51 seconds against Ala. but did so against Miss. State. Would have been nice to see LSU drive down the field with the time available but they did not.

If you look at the replay and they show the shot from behind the QB and in perfect view of the head judge you will see 2 of the D linemen being held. One was about to be tackled but the camera changed in view. One of the first few plays on that same drive Montgomery had their left tackle beat and was about to hit Macarron and the tackle stuck his arm out and seemed to close line Montgomery and stopped his progress.
Any of those calls could have stopped Bama's drive. But we didn't find that out. They won and we lost.
