Run Defense or Pass Defense
Posted by Biggins on 11/20/23 at 1:18 pm

I agree with a poster who posted this. We should be good in at least one of these. Even if talent isn’t there, we should be scheming to stop one of the two. We are bad at both. I don’t get it

Well, the pass defense was suspect before we went through all the personnel issues at DB.
We went out and got 4 CBs from the portal and none of em are available. Not to mention our captain/ best DB in Brooks is out.
Run D is just a comedy of bad tackling, bad technique, bad coaching/ questionable personnel decisions and of course Wingo going down as well.
It's all just astonishing to think we could be this bad.

Against Bama it was like the LBs weren’t even there. This last game a certain someone finally collided with a ball carrier in the gap twice but could only bear hug each time until the whistle bailed him out. Devin White would be ashamed.

We are playing a stripped down version of the scheme now that’s vanilla all the time, so that doesn’t help. There’s no disguising anything we’re doing right now.
The biggest problem with the pass D is playing true freshmen who just aren’t ready. Any QB with a pulse can beat a vanilla zone playing 10 yards off with no blitz or pressure. Other than Ryan (who played well Sat), no one breaks on the ball quickly enough to stop an accurate throw.
As for the run, we get stops inside when the ILBs and Safeties do their jobs filling gaps. That happens maybe 50% of the time. We have no speed at ILB other than Weeks, so outside runs are a huge problem. But we won’t commit numbers up so the secondary doesn’t give up big plays, which gives up a lot of 4-10 yard runs.
We are not really set up to be consistently successful at stopping either. Maybe Weeks playing a bunch Saturday will help with outside runs. He and Perkins have the speed to make a real impact there. But we still have to hope whoever plays inside with him will also hit the right gap.

Based on the 2 college football coaches I know and talk to on a regular basis they are unanimous in saying our secondary makes our front 7 look not as good as they are. Opponents WR's, TE's and RB's are getting open too quickly whick negates our pass rush big time. I am in agreement with their point of view.

I think our pass defense would be better with a better pass rush, however even with a better pass rush with this inexperienced secondary, I’m not sure how it would be. As far as run defense, we definitely should be better than we are showing. Linebackers are a problem, especially when they, along with cornerbacks and safeties miss making tackles.
