I posted this on the MSB, but I will post here also.

If a unsportsman like conduct penalty IS NOT an automatic first down, why did Arkansas get granted a first down Friday? One crew is not right. Which one is the question?

Unsportsmen llike penalty does NOT equal first down ???

if you are talking about T. Johnson's penalty, it was a personal foul, unnessacary roughness, which does carry an automatic first down

Because it was committed by the defense, it IS an automatic first down. That's the rule. Not sure why.

Very interesting since it was 3rd and 29 and even if you give them 15 yards, it's 4th and 14 deep in their territory. Thanks for the post. Should there be some retribution towards the officiating crew?

Why didn't Les Miles Challenge this? Coaching..........??????????

Personal foul is different from unsportsmanlike conduct.

I think it was because it was a dead ball- personal foul. For some reason I think that is what makes it an automatic first.

Unsportsmanslike penalties are not automatic first downs. If it were a dead ball penalty, the enforcement is from the succeeding spot. The succeeding spot is the point where the ball will next be put in play. If the 15 yard penalty brings the ball pass the line to gain, then it is a first down.

Alem had an unsportsmanlike penalty when he kicked the ball.

It was a personal foul...not an unsportsmanlike conduct.

The refs got it correct.
