Because if you are good enough to stick in the NFL for 4 years then you are going to line up a second contract. If you are not these new contracts allow a team to cut you rather easily.

So you disagree with the point that if there are more kids declaring for the draft each year, there will be less of these 2nd contracts to go around? Especially given the fact that rookies make a good deal less than vets eligible for these contracts?

No there are not less second contracts as we are seeing Vets lose jobs, players who are seeking their 3rd or 4th contract and now being forced out for these younger guys. Also with NFL talking of expanding the season you will see them adding more roster space which will give even more guys an opportunity to earn their second contract.

Nevertheless, these guys will have more competition to get pushed out before they get their 2nd contract with more guys declaring early. Once you are out, it is hard to get back in.

the question is are you better prepared to get to that second contract by staying another year in school, assuming you're a 3rd-4th or later draft pick, or UDFA. There's a new crop coming out every year so teams are going to be more willing to cut last year's 6th round pick for this year's.

I think a year working in the NFL is better than another year in college.

Well 11 left from LSU last year, and the closest to that was 4 for any other SEC school. But I'm sure its just because LSU is that much more talented than everyone.

Yeah, it's a growing trend throughout college, but LSU has epidemic comparisons to the small numbers that leave other schools.

Les has to do some work to try and combat some of it. Some guys are goners for good reason, but we have dudes leaving early that barely get drafted or go undrafted. That's an issue.

could be, but the NFL isn't really interested in projects. I may do a little digging into the stats tomorrow with respect to second contracts...

May be fruitless right now as we are only 1 year into the new CBA so none of us are entirely sure how things will shake out yet.

true, hard to look at trends in many things these days due to how quickly the dynamics change.

One thing we are seeing is older vets getting shoved out the door sooner for younger, cheaper replacements. The second contract will probably come easy but after that the third and fourth that some players get may be a thing of the past. You would have to be above average but not great to get three and four shots in the NFL now it seems. If a guy comes out and he is only average a team will probably hand him a second contract worth more than his rookie deal but after that he may be out of options.

The answer is changing recruiting philosophy, and the fan base willing to accept a little lower "boom" level on signing day. Can't clean house every year to make room for a big class.

but there will be a bigger pool of other options available every year. If you're not contributing pretty significantly by the end of your second year you're probably on your way out

Not really, draft is still only 7 rounds and each year the cost of signing bonus goes up just a little (not sure on salary) so keeping the previous kids is cheaper

But they will have more kids coming out to compete for those slots in the 7 rounds. A guy who was previously a 6th round may now go undrafted and end up never playing in the NFL now.

Yeah, there are definitely some things to look at with helping out all around.

But to me, he's always seemed like a smart guy, get ur degree son. Either way you prob won't be getting paid playing gaurd, and could easily be done in a couple of years with nothing to fall back on.

Really? They have throwaway degrees, an ambitious guy can make more than most guys going four years for a useless degree. Those guys would be better off investing half of that million or more in 3 years time. He can go back and finish that degree anytime on his dime with the money he makes.

Also How many of the kids that declared early last year can you truly blame?

Wing - is a punter, no difference from 5th round to UDFA. I mean come on, he's a freaking punter!

Ford - Four year player. He had already got put behind four guys the year prior and would be the same the next year, dude should get a jump and take his chance and not risk injury. Smart professional move.

Ware - He knew he was behind Hill and would have to split carries with 3 other backs almost equally. Dude should get a jump and take his chance and not risk injury. Smart professional move.

Logan - Four year player. He could have come back and possibly played himself to first round, but that is a stretch. Dude was pro ready and started the whole second half of the year I believe.

Montgomery - Four year player. Led LSU in sacks two years straight and was projected 1st round and GMs thought first round until he went looney toons in his interviewing process.

Mingo - Four year player AND a first round pick

Reid - First round pick

Faulk - Four year player and had risk/reward stamped to his forehead. He had already fricked his knee up, would be devastating to do it again the very next year and get no money. Most degrees aint worth shite in the real world.

Mathieu - He was kicked out and the longer he waited to declare, the worst his position would be. He was a first round lock if he didn't get high. Dude is going to get a 40 mill deal in 2 years if he keeps himself clean.

Simon - This is the ONLY guy I had a problem with leaving. That is also simply because he could have played himself into the first round. Long, rangy corner who covered guys like blankets his first year playing. He could have made a big impression coming back and showing his sophomore year was a slump.

Minter - Four year player. Physically ready and could not have gone any higher than early second. You can't coach speed and height so no advantage to coming back.

How long can a man walk in darkness, refusing to see. Isn't it better to walk without vision when there is comfort in the darkness. Isn't it better to walk in darkness than to open your eyes and behold the chaos of destruction. Is it better to live in ignorance and denial as the world you've cherished falls to ruins or open your eyes to the destruction of what once was and what will never again be? It's said that ignorance is bliss. I must concur, for there is sorrow and pain in truth. So many years have passed since an Exodus of such magnitude has plagued a once great and proud state. But, let us rejoice in our success lest we lament the end of an era.
