Nope. We tied for the SEC with an 8-4 overall record with him. His last season we finished 4-7. Not good enough for a retired number, even though he had some great games.

Retired numbers should be for the cream of the cream.

I distinctly remember his senior season starting out "Hodson for Heisman" and at a certain point being "Guidry for Hodson."

Mickey had already graduated before the 1989 season......Hodson for Heisman was in 1989. Sorry.

Nothing but love and admiration for Tommy, but retiring his jersey? No.

Retiring a jersey is reserved for legends: Cannon, Casanova, Tittle, etc.

So was I.

He is the only QB from his era in the top 20 in the SEC in most of the top categories. Go look it up. Most are from those dump off to the back QBs. Hodson's passer rating for a career was 137.3 Dude was money and wasn't this dump and run mess we started to see with spurrier's offenses and those of today. Just a different time period. It was run oriented and not a fair comparison even though he threw for nearly 10000 career.
Lest not forget who was coaching those teams.

Damn. You are right. I do remember this line because I was so upset by it as a kid. Had to be hodson's junior year I guess. Hard to imagine that being right in 88 however

would had been good if he had wr's that could catch

Wow! He had one of the best receivers in LSU history for 3 of his 4 years.

I loved Hodson but I don't support retiring his number. There are a few players that I can think of that deserve it more.

He was extremely good for an underclassman. He racked up gaudy statistics for his career. What is his signature game? A loss to Tennessee (and I admit, that one was epic - maybe the best single performance by an LSU QB in a loss, and better than all of the performances of a lot of our QBs). It's hard to retire the number of a guy who's best game was a loss. Compare that to Faulk's comeback (with scant little help from anybody else) against Houston. Or Davey versus Tennessee or Reed versus Bama.

If Russell had stayed for his senior season he would have shattered Hodson's career records - and won a national championship. Faulk next on the retired number list, and then maybe Dorsey.

I'm not trying to take anything away from Hodson - I'm just saying he's not retirement number material.

Faulk YES
Dorsey - NO. 1 great year and 1 good one does not equal a career.

FYI - His rating for a career in a run oriented offense would not have been broken by JR. Coulda shoulda woulda doesn't mean he did. Hodson was tough in addition to all of the intangibles of being a winner. Too bad we had sorry arse coaching.

NO OTHER SEC QB from that time period (1980's) are in the top 20 but him. the game changed his last season and after he left.

We threw the ball all the time with Hodson. In 1989, we ran the ball 401 times, versus 327 passes. Without analyzing how many of the rushes were scrambles or sacks - that's roughly 55/45 run/pass percentage. 1988 was about the same.

Flash forward to 2006 - Russell's last year - we rushed 450 versus 368 pass attempts - roughly 55/45.

Your "coulda, woulda, shoulda" point is fair, but except for cumulative career stats, Russell was a superior passing QB, in some areas, such as long range accuracy, vastly, in a balanced pro-style offense. Maybe Russell had better coaching (the much maligned Jimbo Fisher) than Hodson, but he had 8 to 10 percentage points on completions and a much higher QB rating.

I still don't see retiring #13.
