But why does he have "far less talent?"

nutt left arky with very little

hell their #1 WR was london crawford, a 3-star guy who was an afterthought recruit for LSU

let's discuss bill clay then...

How many national titles does Nutt have? How many years has Nutt out recruited Miles? What are either Petrino or Nutt's record in the last 5 years compared to Miles? This is ridiculous. There's only two coaches in the SEC that i'd be willing to risk giving up our recruiting classes for, and they both get better recruits anyways. That's Meyer and Saban. Or do you really think that people come to LSU for our beautiful beaches?

I've read the correct answers in this thread only twice. One was that Petrino was going to take the first NFL job he was offered. He would have been at LSU for one or two years then he would have bolted for the NFL.

The second reason is that he bombed his interview. How in the world anybody could be worse at interviewing than Les Miles is beyond me?

Wasn't Petrino the coach that had the secret meeting with Auburn, while Tuberville was still the HC? Didn't Auburn meet with him without approval from Louisville Athletic Dept.

Don't hear much about that anymore, but you'd figure that the sneaky shite would be a bit of a black mark.

i never understood why we cared

if we're sending coaching to the NFL, we'll get the best of the best when our search opens up

Here's the punchline: When Petrino's team does one of the following:
1.) Win the SEC west
2.) Win the SEC
3.) Make a regular habit of finishing above LSU in both SEC and country
4.) Make a habit of getting invited to better bowl games than LSU
5.) Get a better recruiting class than LSU once, much less make a habit of it

Then cry about us having Petrino.
He took a shite team and made them a better. Don't confuse better improvement with better coach. For you econ majors its called diminishing returns.

you do realize he's recruiting guys to arkansas, which is a lot different than recruiting guys to LSU, right?

LOL I would have thought the exact same thing several years ago. However they hired Miles and he had no business even being a candidate for the powerhouse that Saban left behind. Look at Miles' record at Ok State his last 3 years there:

2004 7-5
2003 9-4
2002 8-5

So how does very mediocre performance in a weaker conference get him hired at LSU in the first place?

I honestly think it's b/c Skip wanted/needed a yes man.

You do realize that Okie State had some of the worst facilties in Big 12 during Miles tenure. He beat powerful OU twice with much less talent.
Who has Petrino teams beaten when he had much less talent than them?
Petrino's win over LSU in '08 was JJ's first start. Those stupid penalties gave Arky the win,not Petrino's coaching.
He is a jerk.

You can't have it both ways. Miles beat OU twice while at OSU. Who has Petrino beaten twice with much less talent?
Miles was at a much bigger recruiting disadvantage than most of Big 12 schools as OSU is the number two school in Oklahoma.
Petrino is at the number one school in Arkansas, Plays in SEC,and has Waltons and Hunts for donations.

I'd rather have Miles than Petrino. Arkansas will regret hiring him, you watch.

Although I do agree that there was nothing great about Miles' resume.

And Saban's resume prior to being hired was:

1995 Michigan State 6–5–1 4–3–1 5th L Independence
1996 Michigan State 6–6 5–3 5th L Sun
1997 Michigan State 7–5 4–4 6th L Aloha
1998 Michigan State 6–6 4–4 6th
1999‡ Michigan State 9–2 6–2 2nd ‡

There was simply something more the AD saw in these two coaches (Saban and Miles).

MSU was on probation when Saban arrived.

Saban was also the DC of one of the best defenses ever in NFL history at Cleveland.

He was highly recommended by most NFL people and football professionals.

Best I can remember...Miles was also. Gil Brandt comes to mind as one of his biggest fans. In the grand scheme of the NFL they don't get much bigger.
