Here`s my question. Why would Miles let Garrett go to his second choice and possibly set a precedent that will come back and bite his arse?
very simple answer. Miles does what is best for the kid. if they want to go back home, he allows them to.

What does Miles tell the next disgruntled kid in a similar position to Garrett except his second choice was Alabama ?
I think that has already happened with Phelon Jones, and Miles did grant his release to go to Alabama.

Miles has already set that precedent.
I think it was last year (if not the year before), he let Phelon Jones (highly rated defensive back from Alabama who had fallen pretty far down the depth chart) out of the committment and let him enroll at Alabama under Nick Saban.
I'm sure these things are a case by case situation, but I sense that if the kid is not a starter, Miles tends to be more lenient on not prohibiting the kid to sign at certain schools.
That's what I thought. I think Miles did the same thing with Garrett that he's done with others, including Jones. He realized the kid's career at LSU wasn't working out, but he wasn't going to be a dick about it. He knew the kid was really interested in a particular other school, so he gave him the freedom to try it out. I think it's a smart move. It builds trust and credibility in recruiting, which is very important. Besides, this situation is almost never going to come up except with a player who isn't contributing anyway.

i don't think phelon was released. he had to sit a year.

Miles also let another player go, last year, to an SEC school.
It was to Bama or Auburn. A DB. someone from Bama.
And, since Garrett was originally a MSU commit, its decent of Miles.

i think getting a release means you can play immediately. not getting a release means you have to sit a year, so no, he didn't release phelon to bama

He most definately released Phelon to Bama. A release means you have to sit 1 year per NCAA rules. If you are not released, you have to sit two years.
To play immediately, you have to do to DIAA, DII, or DIII

Even with a release, you have to sit out a year. Without it, you have to sit out two years.

My opinion is that Miles wanted Garrett gone bad enough to allow him to go to MSU. This probably says more about Miles than Garrett, as I think Garrett could be a good QB with the right coaching, something that QB's are not getting at LSU.
