Sammy Grazaffi was a great kick returner (late 60s)! Am I showing my age?

Also, Cassanova did play offense, but only as a rarity. Coach Mac would sometimes sneak him into the huddle after kick offs.

Hard to compare the two - modern era vs. the early 70s - but keep in mind....Tommy C was the ONLY 3 time All-American at LSU.

I'd settle for Jarrett Lee being the next Jeff Wickersham of LSU football. That's actually the comparison I like to use the most with him.

In his day Tommy Casanova was the best at what he did. Likewise with PP he is the best at what he does.

You can not compare the two because they played at a different place in time.

Tommy Casanova was the essance of a team player and I do not remember him ever having a bad game or did not have something to do with the team winning the games he played in.

The one thing I can say about Tommy Casanova that you do not see in athletes this day and time. Tommy Casanova never got in the way of the team winning a game and he always had something to do with the team being a winner.

Until this past 7 year period 1969 through 1972 was the winningest 4 year period LSU ever had and Tommy Casanova was one of if not the main reason for it. During his years at LSU we had the most prolifict QB in the history of LSU. As much as Bert Jones meant to the offense Tommy Casanova meant as much to if not more than to the defense.

I have not seen anyone control his own destiny as did Tommy Casanova. He played his football for three teams his High School, LSU and the Cinncy Bengals 15 years of organized football in all, 4 years in High School, 4 years at LSU and 7 years for the Bengals then he retired on his own timetable not someone elses.

In Tommy Casanova's day you not only had to be good for a year you had to be good in all 3 years you played, then a freshman could not play so they had 3 years and to be considered the best at what you did you had to do it all 3 years. Unlike today and to me a big difference is, if you do it for one year then you are considered the best at what you do and then you leave to go Pro. A great deal of difference than when Tommy played.

Risher>Wickersham

Wickersham did have some pretty bad "doh!" moments.

That dang Sugar Bowl vs. Nebraska comes to mind...2nd half.

We were hosed. Instant replay today would overturn that TD .

Good topic for a different thread - name all of the big games whose outcomes would have been different if we'd have had instant replay.

AT AGE 77 I HAVE BEEN WATCHING FOOTBALL FOR QUITE A WHILE. THAT BEING SAID, I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYONE, COLLEGE OR PRO, COVER GROUND WITH THE EASE OF TOMMY CASANOVA. WITH HIS LONG STRIDE HE JUST SEEMED TO GLIDE OVER THE GRASS WITH LITTLE EFFORT. THE ONLY PLAYER THAT CAME CLOSE TO HIM, IN MY HUMBLE ESTIMATION, WAS A RUNNING BACK FROM COLORADO WHOSE NAME ESCAPES ME NOW. HE HAD HIS SHOES TAPED ON AND LOOKED LIKE HE WAS WEARING SPATS. HE WENT ON TO PLAY FOR THE RAIDERS FOR A BUNCH OF YEARS.

Wickersham had Hillard and James behind him.
Where is the comparison coming from?

Wickersham didn't get benched and he won games.
LSU was a running team in 84-85.

Jose Vargas
He did the dirty work for Dale on the court.
Does not belong at all in this post.
The stuff people come up with on this board.

A toast to your first post. Come back and let us know more about those players from your ERA . The young kids here do not appreciate the greatness of those guys.

So. What's your point?

Both talented but not super-talented QBs who make mistakes, but who also put up tons of passing yards and are/were quite capable of moving the chains and challenging career passing records at LSU.

I think Wick did get benched briefly in '85 when Doug Powell filled in.

In his defense, two games that come to mind that he did his part tp be the hero but FG kickers missed: 1) '84 vs UF (1st game of the season) Juan Betanzos missed a relatively short FG that would have won. Instead we tied. 2) In '85, Wick led us to a short FG for the win against Bama but Ronnie Lewis missed a short FG as well.

LSU has had their share of special teams players but it would be hard pressed to find one any better.

I played against Sammy in 1966 when he played for Catholic Point Coupee. He was great then and you could see then that he was really good. They beat us that night 63-7 also there was another player I played against and that was Buddy Lea he played for Zachery and then there was Roger Hornsby RB/LB and Mike Hornsby an LSU QB that played for Greensburgh.

Brad Davis my senior year in '68 at Independance. My senior year we had a pair of RB's that both had 1000+ yards apiece and one even had 4 punt returns and 4 kickoff returns and niether played College football they both went into the armed services, one went into the Navy and the other into the Marines. I myself as a tightend turned down a chance to play for Southeastern in Hammond.
