"we held him to 17 points in the first half, and we thought we did a great job on him. unfortunately, he scored 41 in the second half"

Ok...I'm old-54yrs. I saw Pete @ the tiny Tulane Gym. He scored 58 points in the greatest performance I ever witnessed. During a 3 0n 1 fast break Pete throws a between the legs pass to his left and bounces the ball off his left foot deflecting it to the trailer on his right for the layup. Brought the house down for sure.

I wish I could have seen him. C.J. was the most amazing college player I've seen. He broke 50, I think twice, against Fla. and Ole Miss. Nobody compares to the Pistol.

Regarding the 3 pt line. I've posted this before but, worth posting again. Pete's last year as a pro was the first year of the 3 pt line. He was injured much of the year and saw limited action but shot .667 from 3 pt territory going 10 for 15. Not much of a sample size to make any serious conclusions but, certainly a hint as to what might have been had the 3 pt line been in existance throughout his career.

I went to grade school and jr. high school with Pete. I played on the same jr. high basketball team with him, though I mostly kept his spot on the bench warm. Even then he was a prodigious talent, though he probably didn't weigh 100 pounds soaking wet. We'd go to the YMCA gym (which was on the Clemson campus) on Saturday mornings, and he'd bet quarters with the college guys on whether he could hit set shots from halfway between midcourt and top of the key. He generally made a profit. (And a quarter in Clemson in 1959 would get you a movie and a Coke).
