I think a lot of people get confused when they see people putting Simmons listed at 4. When most say that it doesn't mean he won't have the ball in his hands on the perimeter. It means he will guard the opposing players 4 on defense. That doesn't mean he will play back to the basket and mid range jumpers only.

On defense you have to react to the offense so you basically name players based off what they will guard. On offense, we can use our 4 to be the main ball handler if we want.

I'm wondering if CJJ brings the press back. 2 years ago it was a pretty effective press and this team has loads of athleticism to pull it off.

Some think we did not because of depth last year but fact was the personnel we had last year was not good at pressing. Coleman, Morgan and Hickey (with Carmouche the first year) made the press work. Outside maybe Q, we didn't have the guys that were suited to pressing.

We'll see with the new kids coming in.

Really hard question. Last season I said Patterson would get about 5 per game till the SEC play and then likely get very little, but he proved ready for the challenge.

This season, we are stacked with good shooting guards. If he is able to bring an element to the court we can't get elsewhere he will play, otherwise he may just be getting ready for a much bigger role next season after we lose Gray and Hornsby (and possibly Quarterman or Blakeney).

Agreed that it doesn't matter where a player is listed in the old g/f matrix, but I don't think Simmons is a block player on either side of the court. I think you will need to see Victor and either Malone or Elbert make a significant contribution on the block defensively and rebounding.

I think Simmons can benefit a ton from guarding post players at this level. He has put in the work to get much stronger and it will be important for him moving forward to be able to guard both the perimeter and the post.

For as good as Simmons is, it's tough to see him, at 6'10", guarding the other team's "3" on a regular basis. IMO, Simmons' role on defense will be the same as Jarrel Martin's prior role. Realistically, Martin and Simmons are the same type of players. The difference is that Simmons is MUCH more skilled than Martin who had (and still has) a lot of raw potential
