Get real. I guess you want Mike Miley's and Johnny Thibodeaux's numbers retired, too?

Can't they just make the 31 a different color than the retired numbers?
I suppose they could. But I doubt they will.

If it's not retired than it needs to be. No single person personifies lsu baseball better than Wally. End of conversation. Period.

I don't think that's a criteria for having a player's number retired.

Fully agree. Retire 31 or at least turn it into a special number for an elected player like the football team has.

They should put up a memorial outside the stadium.

I am guessing none of these people realize the new LSU baseball hall of fame at the box is named after pontiff ..

Alex Box at least got the old and new LSU baseball stadiums named after him. What about Trey Prather?

I would like to say that Wally Pontiff was an outstanding young man who played with leadership qualities. As far as I know, his family was very supportive of their sons and LSU baseball. A great family indeed ! However, I do not believe that Wally's number 31 should be retired.

If we are going to award retired numbers, we should have at least two merits qualifications. One, If the individual statistics warrant such merit as HOF for the college or two, the individual displays extraordinary service to the baseball program or organization. I believe Alex Box dying for his country would merit such consideration.

It is unfortunate that Wally died at such a young age. Tragic events happen all the time. Health issues are not something really anyone can predict with 100 % certainty. As much as I would have loved to had a brother like Wally and a family as the Pontiffs, I just do not belive his number should be retired of Todd Walkers or Eddy Furniss. I think a memorial statue should be a good idea for Wally to be represented but his number should not be.

Finally, there are problems when our young men and women are dying in a war in Afghanstan and Iraq and we barely notice, but a when a young favorite athelete is stricken with death, we seem to grieve more for the athelete than for some unknown soldier. I am almost certain that Pontiff's family will lobby hard and influence their son's number being retired...but I just don' t believe it merits such rewardment.

Trey Prather was probably the best QB with the most potential to ever attend LSU.Terry Bradshaw said he was the best QB he has ever seen.Prather, Bradshaw and Joe Ferguson all graduated from Woodlawn high school.Prather was killed fighting for this country in Viet Nam.

this really is an emotional subject ... what about robbie smith ? wasn't he killed in the line of duty as a police officer ? he was one of skip bertman's first great pitchers and one of the building blocks of what LSU baseball is today ... point being, you could go through a pretty long list of people that you could honor .. honoring just one of them isn't fair to the families and the memories of the rest of them ... wally's name is on the new LSU baseball hall of fame at the box ... that is a whale of a gesture by the school ...

The memorial for Pontiff is now located inside the LSU clubhouse which is where it probably should be along with Robbie Smith. If you start honoring everyone who dies, it would get out of hand. You could make the argument that John Fred Gourier should be honored for penning Baseball at the Box. Where does it end?
