I would argue betting the house on UW +16.5, the first game is almost always a cluster frick on offence especailly since our QB situation is not where it should be, very long road trip, UW is actually a real BCS team with decent tradion, facilities, and talent. I'm not saying i'd bet alot either way. I do think LSU will win but if i HAD to bet i'd bet UW. I'll prolly stay away from this game. History looks like I may be right when LSU opens vs. a BCS team.

Well, as bad as Washington's record was last year, they stuck strong with a damn pretty good BYU team with Locker healthy and will likely be improved this season.
Locker playing makes me think LSU fans need to understand what type of a playmaker that young man is. Add to that a new offensive scheme for UW and defensive scheme for LSU being implemented and you may run into some reasons not to lay everything down.

Gosh, you guys can convince yourselves out of anything. Do we not have one of the most talented rosters in the country like I read on here every day? And was UW not 0-12 last year?
I know they will be much better, but we will improve as much as they do IMO. I'll just say this, I know it's the opener, but if we only beat them by 2 TDs, I would doubt that it is going to be the season that we are all hoping for.

what was the line in that game? was it around 22 or so? i forget. anyway, i read since '96 a team that's a dog between 17.5 - 24 pts. has a 7% chance of winning outright.
so yeah, i'm sure some folks took it in the shorts on that game.
Stanford, at +41, against USC in '07 was the biggest upset ever. they had like a 1.3% chance of winning outright.

i don't think mich/ASU had a line since it was I-A vs. I-AA

Yeah, I was in Vegas for that game....I made a shite ton of money on that one. And the Notre Dame game too. The lines are always skewed the first week of College football, great time to make some bank.....as long as you're smart enough to figure which side of the skew to be on.

i think some books took action, from what i've read.

oregon state ended 7-5 that year a close loss to usc & wins over notre dame, oregon, washington, wash. st. & arizona
arizona state ended 7-5, had a tune-up game against temple before our game & we were dealing with the hurricane season at that point
miss. st. wasn't a horrible team either - ended 8-5 with wins over alabama, auburn, ole miss, & ucf
washington won 0 games last year & got absolutely destroyed in quite a few of them - just don't think it's the same scenario as history would indicate
good post though

Oregon St had Derek Anderson at QB and a defense that was pretty doggone good. We overall had much less talent that year than we do this year. There is no comparison.

I know it sounds corny...but 'never bet more than you can afford to lose'...especially when the outcome is predicated on the supposed skills of kids.

No one, because I don't think they allow betting on AA versus A games.

I would take the points..........but LSU 38, Washington 21 seems plausible.

Personally the line seems like a trap bet. I thought it would be in the 21-28 range. I understand and agree Wash has a new coach and a new found attitude but they were 0-12 last year. Had LSU had an average/good year I could see a potential sleepwalk/tight game. However the Tigers (with a new DC and a pissed off Miles and infinite talent) want to set the tone. This team is too good to screw around and Miles knows better. We need/have to mop up with an inferior Pac-1 team.
I will gladly lay the points.

99.9% of these kids will have never been this far away from home in their life. And certain demographics of people (well represented on this team) have been known to have weird reactions in situations like this. Combine that with the stress of a season opener and this might translate to not covering the spread.

In some places, the line opened at - 14. It's already gone up to - 17 and I expect it to be higher at kickoff. This obviously means that a huge amount of $$ has gone on the Tigers.
I'm not a gambling expert nor do I claim to be. That said, living in Vegas teaches you one VERY important thing. That is, whenever you go against the general public, you stand a better than average chance of winning. This is especially true early in the season, when lines tend to be inflated.
As my late father used to say, "you don't think they build all these gaudy new places because most people coming here WIN, do ya?"

I've been telling my investors to put their money into shotguns and canned goods. That's never bad advice. However, betting on LSU football isn't a bad alternative.
