65 looks like he is trying to give a nut shot. Football was a little more "tough" back in the day.
Keep this in mind next time you are at the Chimes and view the football mural/art thing on the wall and you'll never look at it the same way.

We should have never changed the logo on the side of the helmets -- The number should have stayed like BAMA kept thiers. This was the best LSU Uniform and Helmet.

Cannon was one of the biggest players on the starting ("White") team. What some people don't realize is that Dietzel was ahead of his time as far as LSU's conditioning. Early on he worked out a deal with local fitness guru Alvin Roy to start LSU on a weight training program (something almost unheard of then in college football). LSU's team was not physically large, but pound for pound they may have been the strongest team in the SEC at that time.

Cannon was 220 pounds, the heaviest guy on the team if you can believe that.
The o line wouldn't walk on today's team.

This is how the throwback uniform should look like.
We basically wear our throwback uniforms every Saturday.

Is that Cannon? He had some big legs...I figured all those dudes back then were tiny.
Billy was 6'2", around 215 pounds and timed at 9.9 in the 100 yard dash when drafted by the pros. Later got bigger and stronger and became a first rate tight end for the Oakland Raiders. Played in the 2nd Super Bowl against Green Bay before retiring.

They played one-platoon football back in those days so you had to be a well conditioned athlete. Most of these 250-350 lbers we see sucking wind on the sideline today would have never made it back then. You literally were not allowed to leave the field back then - offense, defense or special teams - until near the end of the half when teams would put in the second string team.
Many people don't know that the Chinese bandits were not LSU's defense, they were the second string players (you were allowed to sub in the second string once per half but they had to finish the half).

Does anyone have a huge pic of the Nike Combat LSU jersey??
Posted on 11/13/09 at 9:08 pm to RANDY44
Actually, the Chinese Bandits were technically third-string, although there was some interchange between teams. In the late 1950s the rules had been changed to allow limited platooning. A player could only enter the game twice in a quarter, so the first string (the "White" team) played both ways. The second string (the "Go" team) specialized in offense, while the Chinese Bandits were considered defensive specialists.

From ESPN OTL. Amazing if true.

Is it just me, or does #47 look like he's wearing Depends?

yall gotta read the bio of alvin roy.
while serving in europe in wwII he drove the army guys who would represent the usa in the olympics.
he went back to b.r. and opened a weight lifting gym. he convinced a ner-do-well Istrouma h.s. to try weight training. they went on to win state twice. then he sold dietzel on weight training.
it was alvin roy that brought the 58 n.c. to lsu.
then he was hired by the s.d. chargers for weight training and he brought what was legal at that time - steroids to pro football. he had seen the russians using it.
i think the pix is from the tcu game.

It is a wonder those guys didn't have heat strokes back then, have you ever held on of those jerseys?
Posted on 11/13/09 at 10:56 pm to blackjackjackson
I think the world of Alvin Roy but to call Istrouma ne'er do wqell is absurd.. The indians under both Browns were a powerhouse. I went to Catholic and in 1963, we beat Istrouma for the first time in 27 years!!!! we got a holiday to celebrate. we hated IHS but they were a great football power. North Baton Rouge did not have a negative connotation back then
