He is putting up Cy Young numbers without the wins that usually come with outings like his.

He's not even the best pitcher in the NL this season. Wheeler just went a full game striking out 12 yesterday. He's also given up 1 run or less in nine of his last 10 starts

The difference is that Skenes has zero room for error. If he gives up two runs, it’s all but over for him because the offense of the Pirates fricking sucks.

He knows he has to be perfect to give his team a chance to win so feels he has to strike everyone out; and he ends up throwing too many pitches.

That still doesn't make him the best pitcher in the NL. Wheeler has been better and his recent numbers show it. It's a coin flip to win the Cy Young according to the odds

These 4 have been the best in the MLB this year, and all have thrown 116 innings (4th most in MLB) except for Brown (104)

ERA:
1. Hunter Brown 1.82
2. Paul Skenes 1.94
3. Tarik Skubal 2.02
4. Zach Wheeler 2.17

WHIP:
1. Tarik Skubal 0.81
2. Zach Wheeler 0.84
4. Hunter Brown 0.90
6. Paul Skenes 0.92

WAR:
1. Paul Skenes 4.8
2. Zack Wheeler 4.8
3. Tarik Skubal 4.5
4. Hunter Brown 4.2

K/9:
2. Zach Wheeler 11.5
3. Tarik Skubal 11.5
7. Hunter Brown 10.9
16. Paul Skenes 9.7

Skubal 10-2
Wheeler 9-3
Brown 9-3
Skenes 4-7

I think Wheeler has a really good shot at winning the Cy Young as the Pirates aren't going to push Skenes.
Skenes is at -140, Wheeler at +105.
You can parlay Judge/Ohtani/Skubal/Wheeler and get it to +203

Skenes with another tough loss. Pitched 5 and gave up 2 runs.

Pittsburgh loses 2-1.

14 straight starts without a win: 6 losses and 8 no decisions. Current ERA is 2.01.

BTW, he’s due to hit arbitration after next season. I’d be willing to ban bet you he’s traded before that. The Pirates WILL NOT pay him what he’s worth!

He hits pre arbitration next year but he is a super 2 so he will get a bonus for being in the top 22% at his position. His arbitration salary for 2027 is projected to be $7 million. The Pirates won’t trade him until probably 2028. People show up to the park to watch him.

Skenes wAR is 4.8 which is second best among pitchers in MLB this year. Thats a better WAR than Bobby Witt and Juan Soto. Guy is fricking amazing. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him get a $750-$800 million deal in 4 years.

Here’s an even crazier stat that adds on to yours: in the same stretch of 13 winless starts,
Skenes had a combined ERA of 1.74
