Here's my 2 cents.
I grew up in Mississippi; wife, father and three grandparents went to Ole Miss, me to LSU in the late 60's. Students there used to be good people but something happened after the civil rights era, integration and the demise of their football program. Most everybody else moved on but not Ole Miss. As posters have said most are middle class but so many become Rhett and Scarlett wannabes after they get to that place. Since it's all they have and I sorta feel sorry for them.
As for the English program mentioned above, they do have a pretty good one. However, the only thing William Faulkner ever had to do with Ole Miss was the fact he lived in Oxford, dropped out of high school and was the University postmaster. On the other hand Robert Penn Warren taught at LSU for almost 10 years and built it's English program to near elite status while there.
