It's embarrassing that fans like yourself cant see that there was other options besides Cowan up 5-0 with 11 outs left. Now if it was 5-2 then yea bring in Cowan. But it was 5-0.

It’s embarrassing that you can’t see there are as good or better options to be a starter. Cowan has never proven to be as effective in that role when given the chance as he has as a middle reliever and occasional closer.

Sheerin has a wider pitch selection, higher velo and just better stuff overall when he’s on. Fontenot has far more velo on his fastball and has been really good lately. Noot, for his struggles this year, has been a starter before and has done it in a couple of high leverage situations. Garcia has come on as of late.

Cowan is really good in his role and we needed to make sure UK didn’t get off the mat. And the way you give them life is putting the back end of the pen out there to start fricking walking and hitting batters, exactly like you suggested.

People act like you just show up on the mound, throw a few pitches then throw 5 innings tomorrow

This isn't 10 year old travel baseball where we just ruin arms. And it seldom has worked for us anyway over the years. The hitters are too good for your arm not to be completely fresh.

Jay has said it many times. When he gets a guy "hot" in the bullpen with all that it entails to get there, he wants to put that guy in. He doesn't want to throw them the next day if they have gotten "hot" if at all possible. And it definitely wouldn't be more than inning or so the next day if he did.

This board changes quickly. Now all of a sudden we "know" that Cowan is the number 1 reliever in the country and will come in and throw 5 scoreless innings on demand.

Where did i say he can throw 5 innings the next day?

He got 2 outs in the 6th you take him out he's good for 2 innings today Max. Once he came out for the 7th then he's done for Sunday and you let him go as long as possible and save the other pitchers

Nobody said you had to throw the back end of the pen yesterday that would be suicidal. But Garcia, Guidry, and someone else could of done the trick. Then Sunday you got Cowan, Sheerin, Rizzy.

Sorry the way Cowan is throwing there is not a better option to start than Cowan. But guess what i guess we find out starting today if there is a better option.

When is Moore coming back?

Again, have there been a bunch of threads before yesterday saying that Cowan has been our Mariano Rivera this year and should be pitching back to back days? Maybe I have been missing those threads or something.

This is one thing that frustrates me about Johnson. Having a plan to pitch Schmidt 5-6 innings then bring in Cowan makes sense, but if you can get through this game now without a high leverage situation developing, why not pivot and try to save Cowan for tomorrow?

This season (and team) hasn’t allowed this plan

All these are available:

Noot (my guess to start)
Cooper
Williams
Sheerin,
Guidry,
Garcia,
Fontenot

Doesn't that look like a group that should be enough for a Sunday game?

I’m late to the party in this discussion, but wasn’t he given this chance in Omaha last year?
