Very rarely have you seen SE on 2nd and short line up in heavy/run set and throw it, I find this troubling

I don't think that they had the personnel to line up heavy like that.

That's why this year is going to be night and day.

I'll go a little further and say it's more on O being conservative than it's SE. I totally agree with T-Bob's assessment of O's philosophy (and I've said it on here multiple times), he's more afraid of the turnover than he is of the gain from being aggressive in playcalling. This is a limiting factor in the ceiling of his team.

You're 100% spot on, des4271. When Mike D discussed E doing what O wants, I took it to heart. Unless O goes from scaredy-cat to saber-toothed, 10 & 2 is the ceiling for me.

And what amazes me is that Orgeron sees what Clemson and others do to put games away, yet he still does the opposite.

They did, it just wasn't in 2 tight sets but with Tory carter as h-back/FB. I'm fine with the formation/personnel but mix it up and run and pass on 2nd and short out of the same formations, that's a big beef of mine with this staff.

If that were the problem, rather than an "LSU excuse", how do you explain spread High School, & College Offenses which the NFL copies?

I think the NFLPA limits practice to essentially the same as college.

Banging your head against a wall for more hours a day does not make you more efficient at being obsolete.

Trying to compare High School, College, Pro football is insane.

The NFLPA may limit the practice, but that does not affect many players from working 80+ hours a week on game plans and film study.

What really helped the Pats was the HB chipping the DE on almost every play before going out for a pass.

Few are failing to see the comparison is that the NFL is becoming more like modern College Offenses:

Make the comparison between LSU, ALA, Clemson. We futilely try to match up in the trenches and limit pace and space options by taking a RB & TE out of the Offense and use them in Max Protect. The result is Phone Booth football which has plagued LSU QBs for over a decade. The NFL is adopting Pace and Space Spread Offensive Schemes from HS & College, not what you find at LSU.

Read the thread. Watch Clemson humiliate Saban who thought he had the best team of "ALL TIME" and just knew he was going to stand on that podium and declare it. The problem is he had to play the actual best team of all time, 15-0 Clemson, and found out he brought a knife to a gun fight.

[/img]

Trevor Lawrence has a Quicker Release than Brady. That is particularly amazing considering that Brady is throwing short quick passes of 5-6 yds and Lawrence is throwing much longer passes.

Brady has a release that has averaged 2.6 secs this season. Who is better as a Div I QB? Brady was 7th string as a RS FR at Michigan and Lawrence won the NC as a True Freshman. Brady praised Lawrence's play.

In addition, he ran for 3 or 4 first downs. He is fast. Lawrence ran past Etienne on a 75 yd TD vs Pitt, throwing a block near the goal line. His Catapult monitor showed he was running 21 mph.

The common denominator of winning the CFPNC is in Scheme: How You Play The Game. If you have O-Line and Pass Protection problems, like everyone at all levels from HS to NFL, you need to change your Scheme, spread things out, develop a short passing - quick release game, and copy what works. It is a Space and Pace Game, Scoring Pts.

The LSU line was different the first several games.
Guy injured. Moved positions.

No two games the same guys on line.

Who thinks you can expect much with that?

They did great considering.

Oh they think that the coaches should've just installed another offense, drew up some plays on the ground, shouldn't take a day or two.

Hell, one of them linked an article saying that it takes 3 days to install an offense.

This is very good, I don't disagree with most of this. However, I do find it over-simplified.

This 100% applied to Les Miles. LSU today is not running a Texas Tech offense, never will. (At least I hope not)

But coach E is in the Middle of Miles and Texas Tech.

Also, If it was as simple as going 5 wide and throwing quick routes anyone could beat anyone in college football. This is not the case.

As a DC, you can man press, with a safety on top and control the run game and pressure the QB with 5. This can eliminate the quick passing game and destroy timing.

The problem Bama had with Clemson was not being able to come close to the QB.

I have also said for a long time that spacing and route running was a giant problem at LSU. Under Miles, it was non-existent.

It still needs to get better, but since Miles, it has come along way. My hope going into the future is the passing game continues to improve and develop.

In 16 we had to run the shite Miles had installed for more than a Decade. What Canada ran in 17 was like no one else in the SEC. The 18 season was brand new in many ways. OC, QB, WR, Scheme, Route Running.

We have seen great improvement compared to what Miles ran. Only time will tell how good we can be.

Trev: Thanks for the feedback and for starting this thread.

Dabo very loose before the CFPNC Game...Saban whiffs on the shoulder tap: "Loosen up Nick, It is just a game."

That easy going attitude drives Saban nuts.

Clemson is running an SEC-Talented program in the ACC:

Dabo took a Big 12 Offense brought in by Chad Morris who originated RPOs in a Tx HS. Then he added Venables from OU. Dabo knew what he wanted as a WR/WR Coach he wanted to have '11 personnel' when he had a great TE, or '10': 4 WRs, RB, and he wanted exceptional talent at QB: from Tajh Boyd, Watson, Bryant, to Lawrence, who is a very fast runner. He caught and past Etienne on a 75 yd TD run vs Pitt. They were both going 21 mph.

So Dabo has SEC Off/Def Lines, Very Fast WRs, a league-leading Heisman-candidate RB, & a 6-6 QB with a missle launcher for an arm who throws so fast the Def cannot touch him. That is the total package of modern football - league leading RPOs, spread, HUNH. When Lawrence throws a 40-50yd pass it leaves his hand before the WR is half way to the catch zone. He uses jet sweeps, pre-snap motions to diagnose the Defense and find a 1 on 1 matchup and he can hand off or throw or run: lots of options.

What makes Swinney different from Saban: He is easy going and he is not high pressure national-title-or-bust, just the opposite of the pressure cooker at ALA. Consequently he has had Venables and most of his Staff around for 6 yrs. They like working for him. no one likes working for Saban, some endure it. Plus his AD, Dan Radakovich was Sr Assoc. AD at LSU (2001-06) with Emmert until he left in 2004.

Success is self-perpetuating. You win 2 out of 4 NCs and destroy ALA, recruits cannot help but notice.

To clarify in response to your comment that this is an 'over simplification, anyone can go 5 wide', I am not talking about Mike Leach's extreme fringe TT Air Raid (although he does it well and may be in the SEC next year), however Kliff Kingsbury did get the NFL HC Job at AZ Cards based on what he did with Mahomes and how Mahomes did with the Chiefs. That hire and others this year are in response to what Clemson, Ohio St, OU, & ALA are doing, dominating CFB. The NFL is full of "Mahomes, Baker Mayfield, Goff, Watson, Newton types with more to come like Haskins, McSorley, and Murray". The NFL needs Offensive Coaches to speed up the game, take care of the QBs with simplified Schemes, Score Points, and chase the Rams, Chiefs, Texans, etc. Scoring is at an all-time high.

Mahomes got Brady's personal congrats after the game. That game was decided by a coin flip. If you win the flip in OT and score a TD you win the Game.

quote:

Patrick Mahomes had some stigma smashing to do when he entered the NFL. The former Texas Tech quarterback put up unreal numbers in college, but was only the tenth player chosen in the 2017 draft because previous Air Raid passers didn’t work out in the pros. Mahomes answered all the doubters this year, leading the Chiefs to the AFC Championship game in a campaign that should nab him the league’s MVP award.

quote:

The Arizona Cardinals had the worst offense in the NFL in 2018 like the Rams did last yr before hiring McVay. The plan is for new head coach Kliff Kingsbury to fix that. Josh Rosen was one of the worst statistical quarterbacks in the league as a rookie, like Goff was before McVay. Kingsbury is supposed to fix that, too. Star cornerback Patrick Peterson believes that will happen. He anticipates great offensive success for Rosen and the Cardinals in 2019. “It was a great hire with Kliff Kingsbury,” he said while participating in Pro Bowl activities via the Cardinals’ Twitter account. “I think he’s going to bring a lot of excitement to the offensive side of the ball. I think he’s definitely going to be able to get Josh slinging the ball all over the field.” Peterson believes Rosen and Kingsbury will team up to be a “dynamic duo” and that running back David Johnson should figure prominently into the offense.

LSU's blocking schemes at the LOS are being blamed for QB sacks and pressures. QB protection has plagued LSU for a decade.

Today's modern Offenses use simplified play books and keep the Defense off guard with Pace and Space.

While it is true that mixing up personnel packages and looks aim to keep team's defenses off balance, using the same personnel packages and varying space and tempo, with sweeps, RPOs and a simplified scheme based on 1 on 1 matchups makes playing QB easier than ever: Clemson, Rams.

The Rams run the same personnel grouping '11' on 96% of their plays

How the Rams created the NFL's Most Effective Offense

Goff, Brees, Mahomes: Playing QB is easier than ever

The Benchmark for Miles was he had to be "Competing for Championships" not "In the Hunt"....5-3 was seen as 'the decline is real'. Now finishing 5-3, lower in Off Scoring, and suffering a 29-0 beatdown, the worst home defeat in 44 yrs for a Top 5 team against the Gatekeeper of the SECW is Exceeding Expectations, 'We're Comin" and "Participation Trophy Time".

7th place finish in Off in SEC

0 pts vs Ala in last 2 home games with O&E

0-6 vs Saban, Mullen, Fisher

Same 5-3 SEC record as 2015 which was 6th in SEC vs tougher SOS and tougher SEC

Now where is the trend line going vs ALA?

LSU Pass Pro: Max Protect Blocking Schemes/Sacks/Reduced Off Production

quote:

I wrote last month about the Foster Moreau problem and how he was never really able to flex on people like he could have because the staff thought they needed him more as a pass protector than receiver.

LSU has also kept the running back in for protection often. This has led to some of our best athletes not getting the ball in space.

You have to go back to 2006 to find a running back with over 30 catches

The Foster Moreau Problem

TE scores in less time than LSU takes to throw

RB scores in less time than LSU takes to throw

Patriots' Red-Zone "Iso" Slant to Rob Gronkowski: The NFL's most unstoppable play. This is a 3x1 formation out of Posse/11 personnel (3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB) with Gronkowski removed as the backside "X" receiver (split end).
quote:

That creates a "trips" look (3 WR) to the open side of the formation, while Gronkowski is isolated on the other side against a defender in coverage. Now, Brady has a true one-on-one matchup to target with the league's top tight end running a basic, one-step slant against both Cover 1 (man-free) and Cover 0 (blitz-man) schemes.

quote:

The Patriots do an excellent job of creating isolation situations for Rob Gronkowski by removing the tight end from the formation. This forces the defense to walk out a linebacker, safety or even a cornerback in coverage against the size, power and athleticism of the Patriots tight end. With Gronkowski aligned as a wide receiver in the deep red zone, a safety has to try to take away the slant. Once that ball is snapped, Gronkowski consistently whips defensive backs on the release to give quarterback Tom Brady a clear throwing window to rack up another touchdown pass.

LSU probably would have fared better on the offensive line if 4 offensive linemen didn’t leave the program from February 2017-August 2018.
