Your arguments are simplistic, so I will keep the rebuttal simple:

Compensation is entirely about future expectations. The reason for a bonus structure is to reward just enough for recent activities to keep productivity at a maximum over time.

You earn raises for your performance and expectation that you'll continue that performance. The contract isn't Miles fault, its Skip Bertman's.

He was given that contract EXTENSION not the raise part because Skip was an idiot and decided to cut him off from going to UM. In the end, we don't even know if UM was even interested.

Again, raises are given initially for past/recent performance with the expectation that you'll continue to perform at that level. Winning an NC shouldn't guarantee you $18 million without any performance incentive. Utterly stupid decision by Bertman.
