is this the most talented LSU team ever?
too early to tell. when I see this question, I take into acct the entirety of the roster and what they actually do over the course of their career, not just star ratings or preseason hype. so it'll be some yrs before we can weigh in on em. the potential's there though.
for my money, 03 or 04 are probably tops. depends on what you think of the guys that left after 03 (Mauck, Lav, Clayton, Hill, Devery, etc.) vs the guys that came in in 04 (Early, Hester, Wroten, Dorsey, etc.).

Wait. No love for the 1969 team??? That D gave up like 454 yds rushing The WHOLE SEASON.Went 9-1 losing to ole Miss by three.Should have went to the Cotton.
And the 1987 team had a shitload of talent.

1958 Team! Also played on both sides of the ball.

Good one. Started out 9-0. Led Bama 7-0 at Legion Field before losing. Ended up 9-2-1 I think.

There's no way those teams from the 60s could keep up with these guys

seeing that we have arguably the best olineman, kicker, punter, cb, safety, return man and the top 2 dends in all of college. I would have to say by far this the best team ever. just check all the mock drafts with our 1000 first round picks and you will understand.

The 2003 BCS championship team has to be in this conversation. That D was off the charts good...better than our D last year and right up there with BAMA's D last year. And the Offense was extremely efficient, and at times spectacular.

I think a lot of last years success was due somewhat to preparation of Oregon. The thing is, most of the dominant players last year were young.
Overall, 06 was deadly scary. So was last year and this year coming (hopefully). Having said that, it's hard to compare a 03 or 06 team with 11 and 12 team. Those are two totally different kinds of players. One has bigger and stronger players (Saban base) while the other is faster with more athletes.
Can't really compare, equally good. It different. I still think the 06 team is probably at the top. But if the 06 played the 2011, who would win? I have no idea

When talking about backfields I think many are forgetting the 82 backfield. Dalton, Gary James, Karl Bernard and Gene Lang all started at least for a time in the NFL. Dalton with the saints, James with the Lions for a couple of years, Karl Bernard for about a half season with the Lions and Gene Lang on and off for several seasons with the Broncos.
Lots of talent that year all around on offense Qb- Alan Risher, OT-Lance Smith, Clint Berry, TE Malcolm Scott, WR Eric Martin and Herman Fontenot, DL - Leonard Marshall (All pro several times), Ramsey Dardar and "Wild" Bill Elko, LB Lawrence Williams, Albert Richardson, Rydell Melancon, Tim Joiner and Greg Dubroc, all 4 db's started in the NFL James Britt, Eugene Daniel at CB and Liffort Hobley and Jeffrey Dale at S.

I agree 06 and 11 scary good but I would take the 06 team with a huge edge at qb along with Bowe, Davis and Doucet to edge out the 11 team. Both defenses dominant but I think the 06 team especially the late season version of the 06 team had a big advantage on offense especially in the passing game.

Just crazy talk. We walked through every team but one last year. We didn't win every game, we walked over every opponent but Bama last year and we had an offense with one dimension and running at 9 in the box. It's not even close...

Last year was as really good ball control O.
2011 LSU scored more ppg, and surrendered less ppg than '06, vs a tougher schedule.

Not even close?
WR. 06
QB. 06
OL. Push
RB. 11
DL. 11
LBR. 06
Safety. 06
CB. 11
ST. 11
Looks pretty close to me.

I also will go on record by saying this is the greatest LSU team ever(talent wise)
We were one decent qb away from that status last year
Now we are set

Do you really think a defense with Dorsey, Tyson Jackson, Highsmith, Laron Landry, Chevis Jackson is going to get pushed all over the field by a one dimensional offense? I think the game would be close but the 06 team had a huge qb and WR advantage and would definitely score some.

age old arguement and you have no proof nor is any available. teams must be measured in their own era against competition from that era. no other way to objectively do it. even tho i intend to agree with you that those teams aren't as good as now, they would probably surprise us all as they were primo athletes. today, not only are african americans playing but potential players start earlier with their nutrtion, training and have better coaching earlier. but those old mofo's were tough as nails and could play them some football.
