He could've made a ton more in 3 years had he held out for free agency.
Considering this year's salary was scheduled to be $640,500 and then his arbitration years. Kris Bryant signed for $10mil in his first arbitration year, Bregs will get $6.6mil more than that in 2020. By the time he hits his 3rd arbitration year he would be close to the $16.6mil number. Perhaps in his first UFA year he could probably get more than $16.6 per year but he's also getting a lot more money NOW. I am sure his agent and accountant went over the time value of money calculations to show him the value of getting the money sooner than later. Sure there's a risk that he will leave some money on the table if he continues on his current trajectory but it's also insurance for him. Being a UFA at age 31 isn't the most optimal for him but it's something he probably had to bend on in order to get the money now knowing that the $16mil number wouldn't be attainable for another 3 years in the arb process. I think it's a fair deal for both sides.
