I think he means LSU went two years without a QB, 2004 and 2006. 2004 wasn't Miles, but I guess this poster overlooked that little tidbit.

Both times seem completely understandable. In 2004 you'd have been trying to get a QB to come into a program with a RS Freshman JaMarcus Russell and a RS Freshman Matt Flynn. Best case scenario they see the field their 5th year...unless something strange happens in front of them.

You had nearly the same situation in 2006. You had a RS junior in russell who no one really thought was going early during most of the season, a RS junior Flynn who looked good when he got his shots and a RS freshman Perriloux who had yet to do anything. Again, best case scenario a QB that comes in 2006 see the field in 2010.

It's one thing to suggest that the staff should have known Perriloux was a frick-up and there was a chance he'd have to be ooted...but how exactly do you recruit a guy like that? Tell him your probable starter is a flake and will likely be booted before he finishes his time at school...?

Take the 2009 class. Miles was able to bring in Russell Shepard and Chris Garrett. Why? Because there was true uncertainty at the QB position based on last year's play. In both 2004 and 2006 things looked extremely solid at the position...thus the difficulty in getting guys to fill those spots.

The talent that Saban inherited from Dinardo was as good as he left Miles in the starting Top 22 --- About 20 Dinardo/Saban players went on the NNFL for at least two years. ---- There was more depth that Saban left.

Huge difference between recruiting talent and recruiting talent for need

Sort of like the NFL draft. Do you go for the best available athlete on the board? aka Reggie Bush

I think you will find that the players want to Play for winning teams...It's about showing your abilities on the big screen...You want to be at a school that is in the NC hunt each year...the next thing they look at is depth...when will I play...It's a business and where they choose to go is a 4 year job interview with a hell of an a gold ring at the end...LSU is winning and in the hunt each year. Lots of national exposure...so recruiting is going well...but let us drop out of the national rankings for a few years...loose the national exposure and the recruiting will fall off as well.

Les can certainly recruit top talent. Saban was great at developing that talent and getting the most out of it. Herein lies the difference.

I hear people say this, then look at:

No QB in 2006

What QB worth a flip would have signed with LSU in 2006 with JR, MF, & RP already on the roster, and none of them a Sr. at that point?

Both Saban and Dinardo brought in good talent also, but one was not able to produce with it.

...and the other one was only able to produce with it every other year.

I finished the sentence for you.

Saban would also say that it's not the ones that get away that will hurt you but the ones you got that will hurt you.

I'm beginning to wonder if Miles is a true evaluator of talent. He is getting guys who the services rate high but is that person truly a better player than someone ranked below him. Also, Saban would get lower numbered guys who turned out to be great players. For instance, Saban would get 3 stars that turned out to be great players. Has Miles recruited any 3 star players that have turned out to be great players?
