He looked fine, but needs to throw more breaking balls and not so many fastballs.

It’s his 2nd outing since TJ. Let’s pump the brakes. He’s throwing strikes but is still rusty. It will take time. He will be a contributor come playoff time in a month.

Yeah, we have less runway left than people think before postseason, so giving Coleman more rope today is not a bad thing.

I’m not buying that.
Coleman threw about 15 pitches last outing. He was at 27 after walking that guy and missing by a lot on his last two pitches.
If you pulled him then, and stretched him just 15 pitches each of the following SEC weekends you’d have him at 90 pitches before the SEC tournament. So there was plenty of time to stretch him.

Maybe Jay had an ulterior reason to keep him in, but pulling him was the right answer if winning the game is the only priority. And there was still plenty of time to stretch him.

It’s not like we left 2009 Matty Ott in the pen to let Coleman pitch anyway

We kind of did. Guidry looks just like him, with the fastball and slider out of the zone. The difference is that it didn’t take a whole season for these guys to realize that the slider won’t land.

In truth, Ott probably hid his slider better than Guidry in 2009. But the next year he wasn’t fooling anyone.

I thought he pitched fine today. He gave up some hard hit balls but he doesn't seem to have control issues like I thought he might after Tommy John. Alderman's homer wasn't a terrible pitch but he did leave the other homer over too much of the plate. The stuff will play and he'll get more dialed in on his locations more and more each outing. By leaving him out there, Jay was playing the long game knowing we need to get him more reps.

Skip Bertman used to talk about winning the SEC. He said you have to sweep the bad teams.

Skip used the entire season as an audition for the NCAAT.

I agree. I was pleased with how he pitched and I think he is on schedule to do well for us going into the playoffs. Some mechanical issues with his fastball but Wes will clean that up. I found that he gets a lot of weak fly balls I know he gave up two bombs but he will be better. We need him.

Skip won 7 SEC regular season titles. The only national championship team that didn’t win the SEC was 2000, thanks to South Carolina winning a record number of games.
