This is probably second-year quarterback Brian Brohm's last chance to save his job. Unless GM Ted Thompson is stubborn about giving up on a second-round pick, there's nothing Brohm has done to warrant a roster spot. He has to play lights out for anybody to have any confidence in him. Starter Aaron Rodgers will play into the second quarter, and backup Matt Flynn probably will play far into the third. Then it's Brohm's turn to save his job.

No. 3 quarterback Brian Brohm has been better in camp this year than as a rookie and has the occasional sharp play when he’s on the move and throws a strike. But he’s developing far more slowly than backup Matt Flynn. Brohm still holds the ball a little long at times and occasionally misfires on relatively routine throws. He also had a bad game last week against Cleveland (0.0 passer rating, 3-for-10, 18 yards, two interceptions) and needs to show some improvement or who knows what might happen on cutdown day?

The Packers invested a second-round pick in Brohm and couldn’t have imagined that seventh-round pick Matt Flynn would eventually prove to be the better player. But so far, based on the games I’ve seen, this year and last, this seems to be the case.

QB Matt Flynn has a firm lead over Brian Brohm for the backup position behind Aaron Rodgers. Now he's trying to make sure he has the lead over anyone else the Packers might consider for the job. Flynn had a very good practice Thursday night. It started out with a strong showing during a red-zone drill in which he threw a 19-yard dart to WR Kole Heckendorf for a touchdown and 6-yard touch pass to WR Ruvell Martin for another score. Those were his only two attempts. In a blitz drill, he hit WR Donald Driver for a 25-yard gain, and in a 2-minute exercise, he drove the team from its own 40 to what appeared to be a 6-yard touchdown pass to WR Brett Swain. The officials ruled the ball down at the 1, but it was obvious Swain scored. "We got a bad spot there," coach Mike McCarthy said. Flynn wasn't always precise during the 2-minute drill, but he made just enough plays to keep the drive alive. The winning touchdown (if called properly) would have occurred with about 10 seconds left in the game.

So... looks like Flynn will insure that LSU has two QB's at number two on the depth charts of their teams this year when Russell eventually gives way to Garcia.

so did you search all that info just to update LSU fans on Flynn or did you do it to ruin all your work and bash JaMarcus Russell?

I think I know the answer, just want to confirm your douchebaggery

Not Russell bashing, just commenting on what's already out there. Don't like it? Tell sports writers to stop speculating about it:

quote:

the quarterback with the big arm and the big body and nothing else
LINK

quote:

To Russell: "Garcia will take your job. He is not there to baby-sit you. He may teach you how to be a leader, - if that’s something you can learn – but he’ll do it knowing that he may be the best quarterback on the roster and deserving of the job if Russell cannot show progress"
LINK

quote:

The Kansas City Chiefs will face the Oakland Raiders for the second time in the 2009 season on November 15th. This game has the potential to be much more difficult than week because of one major factor that I think will come to fruition at this point: Jeff Garcia replacing JaMarcus Russell.

Yes, Russell played better down the stretch in 2008 but Garcia, despite his recent lack of participation in camp, has been adamant that his plans for 2009 don't include riding the pine all season. As a Chiefs fan, the insertion of Garcia into the starting line-up would not be a good thing.
LINK

quote:

With Jeff Garcia joining the Raiders this off season, Russell will need to play well if he wants to remain as the team's starting quarterback.

Besides your stupid cheat shot at Russell for no apparent reason... I said it back when Flynn got drafted and I'll stick to my guns. I think he'll end up being the Matt Schaub/Billy Volek type of back-up that gets traded to a team looking for a starter.

If you want to start a thread complimenting Flynn go ahead - ending it with a cheap shot at Russell was unneccesary.

The sports writers speculate on it because this is the story that sells. #1 overall pick = bust; 7th round pick that was too short, too slow, too ________ and that noone ever thought would pan out is frickING AWESOME!!

Remember when Eli Manning couldn't handle the new york press? was too soft spoken and not a good enough leader? remember when the word "bust" was thrown around at him?

tonight, but not on the tube...replay on NFL Network tomorrow. I don't think any of their preseason games are on the networks.

no shite - Flynn's been doing awesome. I've been following his progress and he's really made some improvements in his game. shame this thread won't be focused on Flynn's progress but will just be another JR/MF thread.
