If you watch the replay Mathieu knew he threw it early. As he got into the endzone he looked back like "oh shite, I hope they don't catch that".
Sort of like the Arky defender who shoved JJ in the back on that TD fumble return and immediately threw his hands up and looked at the official.
Missed calls = part of the game.

It went out of bounds behind the goal line - it would have been first down Georgia on the twenty - right?

It went through the goalline. I believe it would have been a touchback.
Some referee said after the game it would have been ruled an illegal forward pass and not a fumble, so LSU ball on the 5 1/2 yard line

Perhaps all true, however I can't imagine the reaction had the uniforms been reversed.
Well, fortunately, you don't have to.

I disagree - I cannot imagine anyone being really upset with what happened regardless of who was involved.
At total fluke having absolutely nothing to do with the play of the game. Nobody can say they were deprived of something they should have gotten.
Of course there are borderline penalties all the time, and as long as the refs are consistent then nobody should have heartburn about it.
The penalty against Wing earlier is another example. What he did had nothing to do with the play of the game. It was 'against the rules' and got flagged for it. There was no huge outcry.
Just as if he had NOT been flagged there should have been no outcry either.
Now when a blatant foul occurs that affects the play of the game and is not called resulting in a TD for the "other" team ==> that is a reason for sour grapes.

Ain't that the truth. I don't think I could have stomached it.

This is what I think the ruling would have been.
Touchback.
Saw it happen in a pro game once. Player started pumping the ball on about the 10 yd line. Lost control at about the 5. Ball bounced into the end zone and out the back. Other team got the ball on the 20/

So LSU wins 35-10 instead of 42-10. I can live with that score.

Yes, I don't see how the ref didn't catch it. He was looking right at him.

I unofficially return the points.
Tigers win 35-10! Kicked the shite out of them!

total fluke
It wasn't a fluke. It was showboating gone wrong. A fluke is the OK QB dropping the ball last night on his backswing.

I once saw Jerry Rice spike the ball at the one-yard line before crossing the goalline against the Saints. Touchdown, wasn't even reviewed.

Wouldn't it have been an illegal forward pass first, therefore overriding the touch back call?

I don't know...doesn't a forward pass have to have an intended receiver?
Posted on 12/4/11 at 6:57 pm to Tiger JJ
Forget rules... what about the "eye ball test".. Maybe that's just for Bama

Sooooooooo - they should have called intentional grounding?????

It was an idiotic decision by mathieu
Mathieu lost his head when the official threw his touchdown signal before he even crossed the goal line.

Since we won anyway, I say we just declare it karma or payback or whatever for the bullshite celebration call on Wing's "touchdown" earlier this year.
Posted on 12/4/11 at 6:59 pm to Nissanmaxima
Yes it was an illegal forward pass. Otherwise how does the ball go through the endzone in the air?
