No problem with this timeout at all. South Carolina has the best punt returner in the country and Wing could not directional punt worth a crap during the game. What bothered me is that we still have to burn 1 or 2 timeouts a game because of confusion with playcalling.

because wing was averaging about 15 yrds per punt. no use in backing it up 5 more yards.

And what if they had to kick a 50 yd FG instead of a 55 Yd FG?
Considering Wing kicked a line drive punt two yards deep in the endzone, the 5 yards would more than likely have made them have to drive further.

I thought it was a good decision last night. Wing had been punting shitty all night. Les wanted him to punt it into the endzone so their dangerous returner wouldn't have a shot. 5 yards back and it would have been tough to get it in the endzone.
The field position dictated Les's decision.
It didn't look like Wing was trying to get it into the endzone. If he was, kicking it from the SC 44 or 49 should not make a difference. BTW to the other poster, the announcers did question it.
Overall there were a bunch of messed up timeouts. They didn't come back to haunt us, but it does look like a bit of regression for the coaching staff this season. Hopefully they keep all of the forward progress they took this past game and don't get complacent.

I thought the last time out was a good one and the one when usc had the ball on the one was useless.

We had 4th and 5 with 41 seconds to go, and Miles burns our last time out rather than take the delay of game penalty
Why give them 5 more yards? What would be the advantage to that? How many extra seconds did USCe get as a result?

To save the time out in case God forbid they get the FG.

See above. Also, with the benefit of hindsight, Wing could have used the extra 5 yards to pin them instead of giving up the touch back.

The time was irrelevant. The wasting of a timeout is what is important.
I'm not bashing Les for this one, as there were worse uses of timeouts during that game. But I personally would have taken the delay of game instead of using my last time out in that situation.
